Hey! I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm new to thise place, well not really. Ever since I started climbing, 'bout two months ago I having been 'lurking' here. The people here seem real helpful and whatnot and I could just not contain myself any longer.

On another note incase you're wondering about my nickname, it is purely coincidental that it is the climbing term for newb. Whilst I was trying to register my username it kept telling me that I had an illegal character in the nick(gumby3d... are there any illegal characters in that I think not!). So I thought it would be clever to toss in a climbing term that would sound snazzy with gumby, so I went to 'G' and what did I find? Well the term Gumby of course. Anyhow I'm rambling and this has nothing to do with climbing. Oh also, I have never greenpointed anything I came close last week but not quite.

Anyhow, I was wondering, are there any useful tips you guys, and gals, could give me on working an overhang? The over hang on the wall I climb is quite tricky, well only cause it's the only overhang I've ever attempted. The problem I'm having though is reaching far enough over the roof to get at the good holds which are quite high up. I can grab this real slippery hold that I can't really crank on without loosing it. The one I want is just out of my reach. Any tips in general would be cool.

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum.

To make the reach, you could try rotating your hips to give you the extra few inches you need. If you're reaching with your left hand then rotate the left side of your hips into the wall, and if you're with your right hand then... well, you get it.

I suggest working your fingers, biceps, back and stomach muscles. Im sure you can find ways to exercise those. As for newbie tips on overhangs: Push with your feet to bring your belly button close to the rock. It will help take the load off your arms.

My one suggestion for a new climber is to really watch your foot work. Watch every foot until its on the hold. This will help.
Also just doing some baby steps can help you reach that high hold.
Climb on and question everything you are not sure of.

welcome to the forum. helpful hints, hmm. I'd have to agree with radistrad, FOOTWORK is key. Also warming up is very important. Greenpoint is an ok term for a TR send, but i like poultry point much better...
