Cool! I myself am going in a couple of month's (middle of november). We count on staying at La Pollenca - at the NorthWest area of the island. For more info and a guidebook, check rockfax.com. best regards Thomas

There is a LOT of climbing in mallorca so staying in one place really is hard to do, there is a guide book that covers Mallorca, El Chorro and one other place from an online company, but right now I can't remember who, very famous makers of guide books.

Three friends and I stayed in a two bedroom apartment in Soller last April. Lots of restaurants were within walking distance. The guidebook "Costa Blanca, Mallorca, El Chorro was the better guidebook I thought. We climbed at Sa Gubia, Cala Magraner, Creveta, and Villdemossa. There was too much climbing to be had and not enough time.

If you can read French the May 2000 issue of Vertical Magazine has a great article (with maps, sites names and some topos) of climbs in Mallorca. I spent two days there, and did many climbs at multiple sites within a 30minute drive of the main city, Palma de Mallorca.

Check out ROCKFAX guide for Costa Blanca, Mallorca & El Chorro(& updated on website). Plenty of B&Bs and vacation condos/apartment type accommodations catering to UK/German crowd which are heavily discounted during winter off-season. Most of better crags are to the North of Palma(and some on Eastern sea cliffs), so for access choose a place somewhere in northern outskirts of Palma. But the bottom line is that unless you're planning to walk to the crags. driving from anywhere isn't that far away. Good Luck!

Soller provides good access to all the cragging on the west side of the island, but you have to pay the tunnel fee (about $4) each time you pass through, which will be often, especially if you're headed to the main areas, Fraguel or Sa Gubbia However, unless you like cities, I would not stay in Palma -- very loud. On the east side of the island, there's a killer nature preserve/beach with two or three hotels at Cala Mondrago, but it swells with tourists during the day. This puts you close, though, to all the east-coast cragging (Magraner, Caimari -- short but good), the hard stuff at Las Perchas (tufas, big cave, north-facing), and what I thought was the funnest and most spectacular climbing on the island -- Megatufa Land, on the limestone escarpment of Alaro, below the old castle, just about dead center in the island (good, shorter routes below the castle walls, too). I'm sure there's more new stuff as well. The rockfax guidebook is dead-on and a great help. Oh yeah, the crag out on the cape is short and scruffy, but in a spectacular setting.

HOW IS THE BOUDLERING in Mallorca or even more so, how is the bouldering in and around southern Spain? Guidebooks? Where to fly from U.S., any and all info would be great. Thanks.

It's pretty hard to find a nontourist spot in Mallorca, it's a small island and it's all touristy. Palma tends to have the cheapest accomodations but it's also the least interesting place unless you want city life. You will need a car if you want to explore the island. That said, a friend of mine stayed at a hotel in Palma for about 35 euros/night and it was ok. Previously we had shared a cabin for six people in the middle of the island for about 160 euros/day. This was in June of last year, rates get more expensive in July and August. If you have the room to take camping gear there are a number of places to camp, especially in the mountains. Here is a page with camping information (in Spanish): http://www.centaurosdelmar.com/?p=90

menorca is less touristy...both mallorca and menorca are hollow limestone islands dropped in the middle of the med aka both have DWS forget the hype of mallorca if you're looking for cheaper/less crowded go to menorca
