I called the visitors center for Red Rocks at 702-515-5350 and the lady there said that it would be too wet... We're canceling our trip - unless someone can tell me that Calico Basin really would be dry... Ryan

Calico MIGHT be dry on sunday (and thats a big MIGHT)...its generally the place to climb the soonest after a rain because the walls are short (less runoff and less drainage) and receive far more sun, since most (not all) are south facing. It's gonna rain tonight and through tomorrow morning. There's a TON of snow up there, which means its gonna have to be dry for a week before anyone should be doing any multipitch, though the sport areas will be ready by monday. normally it wouldnt take this long to dry, but its cold and its been raining for a week and a half. Anyway, sorry man! Come down for the RRR later next month...it'll be a grand time!

I'm hoping it'll be okay, I'm making the drive out there too. My partner's checking in with me later tonight (he lives in Vegas), I'll let ya know what he thinks. He knows the rock there well enough to make a good judgement call on if it's safe or not.

I live in Vegas and love to climb here. I am going to Joshua Tree for the weekend to increase the likelihood of actually climbing, although I think there will be a window of opportunity this weekend at RR. (the ole' grass is greener phenomena....) It looks like decent enough weather for both places, but slightly warmer in the Monument. That and the fact that the sun gets behind the mountains early in the afternoon if one is in the RR canyons, makes it discernably colder here even if the temps are identical this time of year. At least in the monument, if there is sun, one can chase it till the end of the day. At RR, that would mean hanging at the Gallery....again.....

Hmmm... so those of you who are local and are familiar with the area... what are the chances of some routes being climbable saturday? It's a six hour drive down, and I have to be back Sunday so I'd be driving down Friday, staying down there, and coming back after climbing Saturday. It does look like it should not rain tommorow, and be sunny - and that on saturday it should be cloudy but not rainy... I'm trying to decide... I want to climb in the worst way - but I also don't want to get a group of ticked off people staring at me when we get there and the rock is wet... Also, I've heard there is limestone around there... Any good sport routes on limestone? I've got a few beginners coming along, so anything in the lower grades would be good... Ryan

In reply to: Hmmm... so those of you who are local and are familiar with the area... what are the chances of Cannibal Crag routes being climbable saturday? I t's a six hour drive down, and I have to be back Sunday so I'd be driving down Friday, staying down there, and coming back after climbing Saturday. Ryan I just got back in from the area. It was dry enough to climb. It will be climable if it is not raining. The canyons, however, are very wet. There was moving water running accross the paved highway at 13 mile campground. The upper escarpments are snow covered down to about 5500 feet. As the sun comes out, all that water will drop into the canyons over the next week or so. Sloppy, sloppy conditions in and out and lots of wet corners and crack systems throughout the weekend, no doubt. The Gallery was high and dry and very climable as was Stone Wall and the upper portions of 2nd pullout. Calico Basin was a little wetter, but there was still stuff to climb, just not anywhere close to ideal conditions. none of it

check weatherchannel.com. the forecast for the weekend looks dry. i am also a vegas local. the winds picked up today after the rains and it will be climbable this weekend, unless it rains again. the best thins to do is wait at least 1 day after rain to come and climb. calico basin will be fine, especially the cannibal cliff and sunny and steep. if the forecast says not rain, i would make the trek out here.

Talked to my partner, he thinks anything in the sun will be fine this weekend. Things could still be a little moist on Saturday but Sunday should be fine. We're still gonna do Levitation Sunday...albeit gonna rap off it now. Icebox unfortunately is out for Saturday, will likely be too cold and wet still....but there's plenty of sunny areas to climb in. We'll probably end up on Running Man wall or somthing in that area Sat afternoon. WOOHOOOO Red Rocks.

The loop was closed down all day due to flooding and debris on the roadway (told to me by a climber turned away today by rangers). The snow level is fairly low today. Rained and snowed until early this morning. Chances of scattered showers tomorrow. Good luck, but really not looking good for Saturday. You might choose another weekend.

You're going to love the cool pool's that FILL UP with water after a weather period like this...They are really cool and some of them will be like 15 ft deep!! 'Course hiking around them sucks!!! It's too bad they aren't there whenit's warm out...you could find some wicked skinny dipping holes... HAVE FUN!!!! josh

UGH the approach to Levitation is going to SUCK with all that snow and water running through oak creek...have fun! i'm suprised anyone will be in the canyons with that much run off that will be going through there over the next week or so. i'm also suprised any local would go onto a multipitch climb within 48 hours after 2 weeks of rain and snow....but, thats your call to make. be careful. right now, its supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow morning and be windy on Saturday in RR. highs in the mid 50's. Sunday will be partly cloudy. This is the RR forecast off weather.com (not the LV forecast!).... yes, there is limestone around town. most of it is inaccessible or just too damn cold to climb. if you come, stick to the south facing areas in the Calico Hills. Moderate Mecca, Cannibal, etc. These are going to be the driest places to climb.

Just wondering if there was any update on the weather potential for the weekend. I'm headed out there today and hoping the weather will hold off. I'm hoping rock quality will not be an issue. Post up if you're local!!

Any new update on the weather/conditions for this weekend? Hey Beth - How early were you guys planning on starting Levitation on Sunday? We're considering doing Eagle Dance (which is right next to Levitation) and wanted to know if we should park outside and hike in before the loop opens. I know the approach is long but is it pretty straightforward? With shorter days and the long approach and climb, I want to make sure we get there without any possible delays.

Currently it is windy and cloudy. Only a slight chance of showers. You should be ok. The only problem will be the snow and ice in the canyons

Plenty of time to drive to Oak Creek and hike in from there if you are not going to epic on your descent and get stuck inside when they "close". It will be a messy slog up the washes and those approach slabs will likely be soaking wet as well. Link to current weather ~ click here!

It rained alot up by red rock this morning, and it if the weather has been like it has all week it probably will rain more. I think that it is a bad idea, probably just a waste of gas.

We're gonna be at the gate 6am Sunday when it opens, should be back at Oak Creek parking lot and hiking in by 6:30am. The approach is long but yes, pretty straightforward. Plus you stash your packs before the more vertical part of the approach hike so that part should go faster with just the rack, rope and some water. We just want to make 100% sure we're down off the route, hiked out and back to the car by 5pm. Otherwise it's a $50 ticket.
