from planetfear.com February 23 2004: John 'Fritz' Sumner Dies Mid-Wales climbing pioneer John 'Fritz' Sumner died last week from a heart attack. Fritz was the king of mid-Wales climbing, having developed the mid-Wales crags almost single handedly over the past 40 years. He was a prolific aid-climber, and his list of climbing achievements includes the first ascent of Malham Main Overhang. He had been climbing recently with Martin Crocker, ‘still managing to lead new E1's and E2's’. John Sumner was buried at Llanymawddwy on Monday 23rd Feb. He was aged 68 News courtesy of Al Evans
