In order to get stronger and more flexible I have been thinking about either starting to do yoga or pilates. I have heard that both equally will also help to improve my climbing. I dont know which one to choose though... :?: Any input would be greatly appreciated... what do you think is the better exercise and why? Has it improved your climbing? How?

Pilates is more like an aerobic exercise deal. Think middle-aged-women-fad exercise. Yoga will do more for your mind, body, and soul.

If you want to get into something to help you change your body and your mind/spirt, then yoga. But don't just "go to the gym and take a class." Based on what I have seen in many yoga classes, attending these and thinking that you are practicing yoga is similar to going to a gym to climb and thinking that you are getting the full experience of climbing. But it is not the same thing, and you wouldn't want to miss out. PM me on this if you like. I don't practice pilates, but from what I hear it seems that the focus is more on the body and less (if any) of the focus is on the mind/lifestyle. However, I hear that it is good for strength and flexibility and similar to yoga in many ways. -Kate.

I prefer yoga because it allows you to become stronger with the force.

Pilates was designed for injured dancers, so everything is on the floor... Its a really rather hard workout... yoga is more on breathing and thinking clearly.... both are really great for gaining flexibility, mind over body stregth, and feeling great!

I really like both. I do the pilates for strengthening my core, and they WORK ALL OF your ab muscles and around it. And i like yoga because it helps me think clearer, and it stretches me. I've just had a back injury, and the yoga has really helped me stretch out my back. I haven't done pilates since my injury so i don't know how much it will help me though.

Do both Pilates was designed as mentioned to strengthen the core and to help lengthen the body, there are a lot of misconceptions about it such as this : "Pilates is more like an aerobic exercise deal. Think middle-aged-women-fad exercise. " Pilates is not an aerobic exercise in the least if it is practiced properly. If you are doing pilates correctly you will find a strong mind/body connection exists. It's a very pure exercise routine and actually a lot of the poses come from yoga. Don't let the infomercials which are marketing it to death scare you away. Most people who do and have been doing pilates for awhile also do yoga as they complement each other quite well. Yoga will help your overall flexibility improve along with a lot of attributes mentioned.

From my experience, I found pilates to be good for strengthening the core, but since I'm not flexible, it was also difficult to do the basic moves (sit up straight--I'd always be slightly curled). Yoga, on the otherhand, was easy on inflexibility and helped "lengthen" me.

my girlfriend does pilates now--she says its wonderful for core strength--lots and lots and lots of ab work (she's got a better stomach than me!) if you are looking to increase your core, i recommend pilates... i took a yoga class a while back--i loved the increased flexibility but hated the guru-spirit-love thyself and the world crap...its too bad they don't offer a yoga that is just exercise and no juju (this is just personal, some others really enjoy that aspect)
