One of the guys I eat lunch with came up to me today and told me he was going to start climbing. He said he was going to buy some stuff to start. I asked him how much money he had and he said he had alot. Now the problem is this dude really isnt the climbing type, I have seen him litter around our schools three big awesome oak trees when it was fall and they were turning colors, not to mention many other times. He also likes to get trashed on the weekends and is kind of a trouble maker. (He and I are both 16) He just doesnt seem ready to begin the respect and responsibility that climbing demands.

Now has this happened to anyone here? I cant just ingnore him because he will come to my local wall probly and really annoy me.

Most definitley. I was pretty straight laced till i started climbing and reading about harding and verm and bums selling weed in camp 4 and climbing walls on cid. I drink etc way more now than before.

If he's got lots of money get him to buy you gear and beer.

He gets trashed AND is a trouble maker???

don't worry he shouldn't last long in this activity
plenty of people, who've put up legendary ascents, were known for being angels

If you don't think he's "the type", don't worry, he won't last long.
If he is, well maybe he'll change.

wait...one of the guys you eat lunch with annoys you? huh?

To throw out an alternative point of view...if you have ANY reservations about his ability to be responsible on the rock, esp. as your belayer, then I'd opt not to climb with him. Period. It doesn't matter if he can handle it, it matters if you're confident in him as well.

If you take him out then it is my opinion that you should also teach him about ethics, and that there are a lot of people out there who if they see you litter they will shove it down the litterers throat.

very simple. he digs trees that turn colors in the fall. i suggest you loiter around other trees around your school that don't change colors, like an ever green, or one of those short bushes that's always green too

good luck

oh, if you really meant "litter," then your rambling makes no sense

It's simple, tell hem the rules of climbing, ie leave the crag in better shape then you got there, bla bla bla and so on. If he agrees take hem out. I know alot of climbers that get trashed and cause trouble but on the crag there are perfect climbing partners.
Peace out

Hes a trouble maker, as in arrested, court hearings, juvenal center, community service. And yes I meant Litter, and our local crags dont need anymore of that.

Blow homeboy off. I had a friend in high school that I got into climbing. He's basically a good guy, but had hung out with the wrong crowd for a bit.

One day, on our way to the boulders, I stopped for an oil change. While I went to take a leak, he stole a woman's unattended purse in the waiting area, rifled through it, took some money, and dumped it in the trash can. I come back out, see this, and know we're screwed. We're sitting ducks: My car is 15 minutes away from being done.

The woman and her husband come back in, see that the purse is missing, and call the cops. The cops show up, find the purse in the trash, have us up against the Coke machine frisked (meanwhile the mother of a longtime childhood friend is also there, getting her oil changed), threatening to throw us in juvi hall. Also, I had some contraband in my car, which they wanted to search, even though it had been in the garage, up on the platform, getting the oil changed.

Eventually they let us go--lack of evidence.

If you want this to replace a tranquil trip to the boulders then sure, hang out with this guy. Otherwise, I'd blow him off. Some people need to learn the hard lessons themselves. Do you want to be there when he screws up?

Here's an awesome oppertunity to share the climbing world with a kid who's life it could change. Take him into to your world and explain to him why you love the out doors and why its important to keep it clean. Chances are he'll think it's cool. Caring for the world is contagious. One of the coolest things I've wittnessed in climbing was Chris Sharma picking up trash as he was walking to the boulders at the PBC. What a powerful example.

i kind of like the opportunity it presents. here's a chance for a young man to find something meaningful in his life. but it is a bit much to ask you to make sure that you are safe with him. my suggestion--take him with you, if he asks to go, but add a responsible adult climber to go with you. that adult can serve as a role model and can more easily explain the ropes, so to speak eh.

good luck.

I have to agree with ldsclimber and jefffski.

Climbing may be just what this guy needs to change his life, but you've got to show climbing to him in an assertive way. He has to see the serious side of it first, and then catch the excitement. He has to understand that death is possible, so he'll respect your safety and his own. He needs to have a chance to be himself in front of other climbers, so that his attitudes can change because he doesn't want to look or sound like an idiot. Take him to a busy crag, where he can feel a little overwhelmed with the new type of lifestyle climbing creates for some people. Make it an experience so new and enormous that he will be forced to give it some serious thought and consideration from the get go. If he sees climbing for what it is, and if it takes hold, then it WILL change his life.

Don't let him blow a huge wad of cash, just have him get what he needs, and after he's hooked, he'll keep buying more! (See, climbers are "junkies" if you look at it this way! )

Hey, let us all know how it goes -- keep us posted, this will be a good qualitative study!

I, for one, am very interested in the results. PM me.
James.

yeah.... he might change....

but seems like quite a trouble maker to bear with. Don't wanna mess around with a belayer like him. I'd see me falling from 10 stories if he's not serious about it.

Climb safe.

Have him buy all the gear (that you would want on your rack) then take him. If it sticks, great, if not, you just picked up a cheap rack.....
