Yes, when you get involved in Access Fund issues, particularly fundraising via event planning, and are even remotely interested and social, you will meet lots of famous climbers.
No worries. That one guy who blasted me may have been having a bad day. Hopefully he is in a better mood tomorrow. Being a sour puss is usually a temporary thing. I'm not into being a smart ass, all smooth with the zingy comebacks. Not my style. Not my game. Not something that I usually admire. I'll cut him some slack THIS TIME. Did I ever mention that I'm Sicilian... :wink:

Growing up climbing in Colorado Springs in the early to mid 80s, I got to climb with:
HARVEY CARTER (nice, but weird)
BOB D'ANTONIO (nice, cool guy, not afraid to go below his level to help you out)
EARL WIGGINS (what passion...RIP)
ART WIGGINS
STEVE CHENEY (mellow, cool, nice)
PETER GALLAGHER (Strange in a cool way)
WILL GADD (business like, but cool anyway, bummed a ride to TURKEY ROCK with me a couple of times)
DALE GODDARD (put up...ahem...belayed him up a couple of new routes at SHELF, nice guy)
JAY SMITH (held his ropes, seemed kind of arrogant though)...
Then moved to NEW YORK:
Ran into DON MELLOR in the DACKS near WALLFACE (gave me BETA, nice guy)
Had met LYNN HILL and RUSS RAFFA through their friend BOB D', climbed with LYNN and RUSS in the GUNKS, super nice (at that time at least, she was not REALLY FAMOUS like she got in the 90's).
Also climbed with TODD SWAIN in the GUNKS.
Moved to GREAT BRITAIN:
Saw BEN MOON bouldering at the FOUNDRY, he seemed like an ASS!
Walked by some famous BRITS cllimbing hard at MILLSTONE and FROGGATT and CURBAR, and STONEY MIDDLETON, can't recall their names, but they had REALLY BIG BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, I have traded PMs with JOHN GILL, he is a nice guy too :wink:

Met the Horsts last weekend. The parents were putting up new routes at Beer Wall at Bubba City at the NRG and Eric Horst was climibing with his little kid. All pretty cool people, I just hope I can climb that hard once I get to be thier age. :D

[sprayfest] On the east coast, I have climbed extensively with John Stannard, Steve Wunsch, Kevin and Barbara Bein and Mike Freeman. I have climbed a couple times with Russ Raffa, Russ Clune, Lynn Hill, Rich Romano, Rich and Terri Gottlieb, Rich Goldstone, Jeff Gruenberg, Jack Mileski and Jim McCarthy.
Out west, I have climbed extensively with John Gill, John Stannard, Kerwin Klein, John Sherman, Chris Raypole, Bob VanBelle, Vaino Kodas and Hidetaka Suzuki. I have climbed a couple times with John Bachar, Todd Skinner, Scott Blunk, and others.[/sprayfest]

I have a funny story about him and Schneider. They were both at a PBC about 10 years ago trying a V8 problem. I went up and felt the starting holds and these guys gave me shit for "greasing up" the holds.
So, they proceeded to flail on this thing repeatedly--and never got it. I then was quite happy to fire the thing off first try.

Yo, I'm crying foul on that one. I was on location in LA from Monday to Wednesday, filming, then off to New York for Thursday and Friday, then back to my crib in LA Friday night, getting there at 1 in the morning, then off for the day to Salt Lake City at 6 the next morning. Straighaway I was sitting at a table signing books. My publisher brought 600 copies of How to Rock Climb and I signed them all, though I doubt anyone could read my writing since I was so beat.
If you're ever in Santa Monica, stop by my pad and we'll grab a bite. I'm not so good around 600 people, but one on one I do okay.

With all due respect bvb .. that is exactly what climbing is. The history of climbing reads "X climbed Y in Z style on this date" ... and it was that way long before the climbing rags burst onto the scene.
The Golden Age of Yosemite (for example) is a record of the accomplishments of individuals ... along with a long list of funny, and terrifying, and inspiring stories about these individuals. Great climbers tend to have great personalities .. which lend themselves to stories and story telling.
Does this mean we should succumb to hero-worship? HELL NO. I climb for ME. But I enjoy reading about the exploits, adventures, and misadventures of other individuals who share my love of climbing.
Hmmm ... I'm probably picking nits again, huh? :)

In reply to: I never understood the fascination some have with meeting famous people. I've enjoyed going to listen to famous climbers put on slide shows and talk about their adventures, but I could care less about getting a poster signed or shaking their hand.
I agree. I was lucky enough to see John Sherman give a slideshow last weekend at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival .. the guy is hilarious! :)
I've also met some of the people featured in magazines, and enjoyed talking to them about our sport ... and watching them climb. It didn't occur to me to get something signed, though ... I was too busy trying to figure out how they spliced the gecko into their genes. ;)

Ok .. funny story ...
About three years ago, I moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia for school (and a woman ... longer story, not so funny). I was a little depressed, because I was under the impression that the East Coast had no climbing[1], and I was going to be stuck on the ground until I finished this degree.
A couple of months in, I had found a gym and been climbing on plastic semi-regularly. It was better than nothing, and some of the people I climbed with were pretty strong. At any rate, it was fun.
One day, I come in, and immediately scope two things: (i) a hot blonde watching someone climb, and (ii) the guy climbing was floating up my hardest problem ... with his feet hanging in the air.
I sat back and watched, alternating between the hottie and this guy who, apparently, had just warmed up by campusing laps on my hardest send in the gym.
A couple of minutes later, the manager of the gym calls me over and introduces me to two of the nicest people I've ever met .. Tommy and Beth. :)
[1]: I was quite wrong about the outdoor climbing in NS, btw ... some of the best granite bouldering I've ever done. Take a look at this site.
