Hi all: Time to buy a helmet. I want a strong safe helmet but also one that's not going to get in the way while climbing. I've heard good things about Petzls Ecrin Roc. The complaint seems to be in it's bulkiness. Is this valid or just folks wanting to look "chic". I don't care what it looks like, what it weighs, if it's hot. I just don't want it to slow me down. Let's hear your thoughts. Thanks, Charlie

I've got two helemts, a Blue Water that is horrible, it has plastic in it suspension and the plastic is tearing.
I also have a BD Half Dome, I like it a lot.
It is not too cumberson and its easily adjusted.

I have an HB Joe Brown, and I like it very much. I didn't want a high profile helmet, so I looked at the HB and the ABC/Kong Cornice. The HB is fiberglass, has a fairly low profile (for a climbing helmet), and is tough as nails. The ABC/Kong is plastic, offers a full coverage fit (more like a snowboard helmet), and is very affordable.

All right Jeff! The Joe Brown is sweeettt! It has the hard core 70's look to it.
I have the erin roc. I like it alot. The adjustable dials make the helmet a step above others. High winds make it whistle!
But if I were to buy another I think I would get the HB El Cap kevlar. Looks cool!
Thats all I have to say at this time.
Crack.

Love my BD Half Dome.
Light weight, comfortable.
Don't know if it'll keep my knob from caving in as I have yet to put it through a true crash test, and hope I never have to.

check out my article on helmet hunting here.

I have the BD half dome and must say it's a good helmet, the ecrin weighs more and is a bit bulkier.

the lighter foam and polycarbonate helmets are good for sports climbing mostly.

I have a Cassin helmet that I got so I can use it Mountain Biking, too (rated for both), but it sucks. It has a big rim on it so when I look down for foot placements I smack the helmet against the rock.

Everyone I know has the Petzl ones and likes them.

I find that my $60 Lucky helmet is ample. It's just a simple plastic helmet, with adjustable back strap. It's a bit awkward to climb in, but better to be awkward then to be hit in the head by a rock. I can't see the point in paying a large sum of money for a helmet, like some of the Petzl's.

Thanks everyone. Just a thought..Why do they differentiate helmets for sport and big wall. Are rocks from sport climbing softer?:-) A rock that falls 50 ft. or 200 ft. is still gonna hurt. Charlie

They differentiate between big wall and sport by durability most foam helmets are considered sport helmets, while wall helmets are fiberglass or thick plastic, not to stop harder rocks dropped from higher, but to outlast the rubbing, scraping, hammering, sitting on, and hitting you're partner with it, that big wallers do.
I would never buy a foam helmet, I was at the crag, and saw a guys pack fall over with an Ecrin Roc strapped to the outside, when the helmet hit the ground it broke right in half. He had never even worn it, it didn't impress me at all, I could back my car over my Joe Brown and probably not hurt it! That's the one I want protecting my head!

The foam ones are SUPPOSED to break. They take the impact up that way.
