I have never climbed before, but am very interested in taking lessons on outdoor rock climbing. I live in the Washington, DC area and was considering taking lessons at Carderock through Earthtreks or at Seneca Rocks through either Seneca Rocks Mountain Guides or The Seneca Rocks Climbing School. Does anyone prefer or recommend one school over the others? Any suggestions about other rock climbing schools in the Washington, DC area or feedback on any of the schools I have mentioned above would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I highly recommend Adventure Schools rock climbing school. Their instructors are great... not only are they great climbers, but they also know how to help you learn all about climbing. They have private lessons, as well as structured group classes where you can learn all about toproping, belaying, rappelling, and anchors. Check them out at www.adventureschool.com

Seneca climbing involves multi-pitch climbing so unless you've climbed before and decided that you like it I wouldn't recommend it as a first lesson. Because the exposure could put fear in you for good. Any other schools around the areas are fine for introductory level. My recommendation is to take a beginner course. If you like climbing go buy shoe, chalk bag, harness and an ATC then either hangout at Carderock or join a club (PATC). There will be people at Carderock (or Great Falls) who would be glad give you pointers and let you climb on their ropes. And the club is a great way to meet other climbers as well as learning. They do regular outting. Good luck.

While in the past, scaling the monuments might have brought merely the risk of arrest and fines, with the heightened security around these parts, I'd say it might very well bring the risk of being shot. To the OP--Earth Treks is a great gym, and I know at least a few people who got started climbing in either their indoor or outdoor courses, so I'd definitely recommend them. Great people and instructors.

Earth Treks and the Adventure School are both excellent choices. You may also want to try my guide service, Redpoint Adventures. I can provide equipment and transportation from downtown D.C. Toprope courses are available seven days a week. Send me a message, e mail, or call 202-588-9078 to find out about course descriptions and special rates.
