I was climbing at frenchman coulee in eastern Washington today and sometime during the afternoon what looked like a medical evac helicopter flew in and spent an hour or so hovering around the sunshine wall. There also appeared to be flashing lights from sirens at the parking lot. Does anyone know what happened?

I read the articals there and i would say it sounds like not ancored in before hook up.. hard to say tho.. either way it is very sad to hear of a death in my back yard. my condolences to the family on this tradgedy. All i can say is this just shows you that in this sport you always need to be extra careful, and i hope no more accidents happen this year at the coulee.

The accident was caused by someone who messed up the rappel. They rapped off the end of the rope, because both strands weren't touching the ground. It has nothing to do with a climbing area. Please don't spread disinformation like that.

russ and i have climbed down there quite a bit with no incident so no it wasn't the area that was the problem.

after reading a couple local newspapers and the cascadeclimbers website the common consensus seems to be that the accident was caused by the ropes not being centered when he rappelled and he came off the shorter rope. and not that is sounds like it would have helped but the climber wasn't wearing a helmet either it sounds like.

our sympathies go out to the climber's friends and family and for those that witnessed the accident that can't be an easy thing to get over.

the problem with Frenchmanís coulee or vantage is that the rock is basalt that tends to crumble and there is lots of loose rock but is a great place to climb the sunshine wall and the feathers are very popular climbing spots in that area, the bolts there are in good condition, there is nothing more dangerous about this climbing spot than others, except in the spots that are not climbed very much for there can be loose rock so wear a helmet, but you should any ways.

don't trash a place if you havenít been there, there is just no reason

This news...though it isnt news by now hits hard and hits close. I've spent many years climbing there witnessing a slow change...some inevitable. Seeing the campground become a waste sight during the summer...the FCCC doing a superb job keeping it clean, posting and advising climbers of all levels. Be safe everyone...this is more than just a TREND or FAD no matter how great REI's deals are!!!
