I would suggest taking a stroll through this Beginner's forum to see what sorts of gear items are discussed.
After that, a number of places are an option to buy gear. Real stores, online stores, it's all up to you.

For ropes the best bet (if you going on small crags (~60 feet) is at www.gearexpress.com. Look under short ropes. There are ropes for 60-90$ that are around 120-140 feet.
As for carabiners, goto www.rockempire.com. Their petite dru carabiners are 4.50$ each. Quality biners none the less. UIAA and CE certified. Rock Empire's harness's are well constructed and around 40$.
For beginners shoes www.climbingshoes.com has 3 styles of beginners shoes for 70$. There is also a pretty cheap pair of la sportiva cobras for 50-60$ at www.barrabes.com.

I have to agree. Get a starter package. You can always upgrade as you see fit. I just bought my first setup. Harness, shoes, bag, and belay devices. I'm very happy with it all, even though I'm relatively new to this sport. I haven't had a problem with it. I think it's like anything else. You can start at a beginner level with equipment, and move up really easily.

for climbing shoes this is what will happen...
You will try on a pair of shoes, they will hurt
The salesman will say there too big[/b Don't lisen to him, you are a you need comfy shoes when you start out. dont get them too lose, they should feel snug, but not painful. Once you get better, you should need 2 quickdraws clipped to the pull loops, and be yanking as hard as you can to get your shoes on.

In my opinion, I think that some of the better brand names include; 5.10 (shoes), RockEmpire (harness') as well as Balck Diamond. A lot of the styles are up to you. Most of the brands fit differently, so you would have to try them out and see what you like! If you are looking into biners, I have been lead to belive that Petzl makes the best stuff.

Go with a BD momentum setup, it works good for the money. Shoes will be a personal thing, la sportiva makes nice shoes. That should keep you at or below $200.00

I purchased the Singing Rock Harness package from REI over a year ago and have been very happy with it. Includes Attack harness, ATC w/locking biner, and chalk bag. As for shoes, if you have an REI in your area and you're a member they sometimes have great sales for members only. If you are really on a budget (like I am) you can wait until they sell their rental shoes. I picked up 3 pr fo r my girlfriend and I for $35 total.

CHALK, and Find a experienced partner with gear until you get the cash flow moving!! (-:
AND if you really need a harness and you are really hard up for money, I made my own out of rope when I first started, bit uncomfortable but cheap!!

i would just go for shoes and a chalkbag for now. spend your time bouldering to build technique and strength(plus at okc rocks, its cheaper than a full day pass..)

First of all you should be paired up with an experienced leader. The leader should have a rope, a full rack, and various quickdraws biners etc.
As the newbie you need: (this is what my partner actually sent me the first time)
Harness
climbing shoes
chalk bag (w/chalk)
Belay device (ATC)
2-3 locking biners
4 foot sling (not 4 one foot slings)
So what is this stuff:
Harness - hope this is obvious if not take up chess
climbing shoes - Climbing shoes provide better traction then sneakers
chalk bag (w/chalk) - for those nice warm days where your hands will be sweating.
Belay device (ATC) - You will be belaying and if you are following the leader will be belaying from the top so you need your own
2-3 locking biners - Belay device clips to it, locking for safety. Once at top anchor in.
4 foot sling (not 4 one foot slings) - Used to anchor in.
Your leader can go through all the steps but that is the newbie laundry list as we call it.
Anything else your leader probably has extra but ask them before you climb what you might need. Starting off is relatively inexpensive but wait till you advance forward.

I suggest a harness and shoes and maybe a rope to begin shop aroound for these try www.sportextreme.com I had great expierience with them and also www.gearexpress.com
I like petzl harnesses they are comfortable and are safe

I started with a pair of Bufo Weapon shoes and a BD chalkbag + Franklin chalkball, and they serve me well!
as for harness and rope, they can come later...

Here is the deal just look on the net or GearExpress.com and get a starter package. They will all be safe to use, if they were not they would not be allowed to sold. For cheap shoes look at Barbbles web site or sportextreme.com

People keep telling you about rope. You don't need a rope yet. You are a newbie and we all were newbies. I have been climbing over a year and just started to lead. I just bought my first rope. Your experienced climbing leader should have it. It is not needed until later.

Shoes, harness, belay device and a locking 'biner. Optional: helmet, chalk bag,
lycra tights.
Check the beginner forum. Get a few lessons on the use of the equipment and how to tie into your harness. After that, some lessons on how to belay your climbing partner.

www.sportextreme.com got climbing shoes for really cheap. Got my Boreal Zen there for $80 (REI sells them for 135). I would suggest go to your local stores to try them on before you order them online. www.rei-outlet.com also has good deals.

www.overstock.com has a climbing gear section. Not a big variety but you van get packages (harness, chaulk bag, belay devise) for a for a good price. Drawvback is that you can't try on the harness to make sure it fits right. Most reputable gear stores( REI, Gaylans, etc.) will have beginner packets as well, again harness, belay devise and chaulk bag.
If you are a beginner this is all you NEED :harness, belay device, shoes, and a locking biner.
Oh, and something to climb and a partner more experienced than yourself.

If you can go with a petzel harness it is the best thing I ever bought, or even better go to an outfitter and try a bunch on you'll know what feels best your should try not to buy the cheapest harness or shoes because the harness is good for five years and the shoes three and if you plan to advance soon you don't want to have to buy all new gear try to hit up an REI, they are great and are not corporate!!!!
