I'm a newer climber and I want to buy some climbing stuff. Simple enough right? i have found 1 simple problem.... i'm broke. while im fising that problem i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on cheap gear and where to get it. and if anyone has seen anything about a cheap crashpad please post here.
also is there anything im missing in what i think i need...

Rope
about 3 or 4 locking beiners
figure 8
webbing

if your gonna be lead climbing you need quickdraws as well, probably around 10 of them. You also need an atc (belay device) and rock climbing shoes.
I would say the most important thing you need is rock shoes. Second is your harness+belay device+locking biner.
The other stuff hopefully your climbing partner will already have.

I agree with Oudinardin. For a newer climber, instruction is key. Quite possibly the key to survivng your first year or so of climbing.
If trad is your aim, then a few items will get you by to start with. I'll name them in order of, what I believe to be, importance.
1 - shoes that fit well. Don't make the all too common mistake of getting them too tight!
2 - Harness, ATC (or the like. My favorites are Jaws and Reverso), Large locking carabiner.
3 - Nut Tool with carabiner and a keeper sling. (Follow as many leaders as you can. Learn from their experience. You'll eventually decide for yourself what seems like safe practice for you and what doesn't.)
4 - a couple of standard length runners with 2 carabiners each (preferably straight gate as they're more versatile for trad).
5 - Top-roping gear (once you understand the dynamics of ropework and what constitutes a sound and solid anchor. GET PROPER INSTRUCTION FOR THIS STUFF. DON'T RISK YOUR LIFE UNNECESSARILY. There are also many books out that can assist with learning how to set up anchors. I've always liked John Long's books on How To Rock Climb.) such as a couple of 20-40 foot lengths(depends on your area) of tubular webbing and 2 or 3 locking carabiners. Oh yeah, a rope! :roll:
That should get you started. Just get the shoes, harness, and oops, I forgot a CHALK-BAG :wink: to start and TR with as many people as you can. Work your way up the food-chain slowly and learn everything well as your ass depends on it!

You don't give your location, but in Socal, the 5-10 outlet store can get yousome great deals ($35 shoes)
I've found www.climbaxe.com to have some of the best deals.
However, you don't need a rope, unless you know how to set up anchors, and have the gear for it. If you want to do that, you need three 'biners for the attachment of rope to anchoring system. non-lockers are fine.
However, I'd think, for a broke bloke, hooking up with people who have the gear would be a better way to go. Gotta have the harness, shoes, belay device (agree, forget the "8").

do not get an figure 8 they are not very good for belaying, get an ATC or similar device. also as you are a beginner you probably stick to the top rope (and climb with someone who has experience or take a class) so you are going to need either some runners or 1 inch tubular webbing (cheaper) and at least 4 locking beners for the anchors, learn how to set everything up properly before you try to do it your self, reading books don't count as learning how to do it

Most use a ATC or a HB Sherriff (my fav), they're about $15-$20.
You can use an 8 too, but that's mostly old school (speaking from experience).
