My dad is pissed at me because he thinks colleges will only accept or give scholarships to people who played a highschool sport or were in choir or band or something. He says I should have be playing a real sport instead of wasting my time climbing. Not that I'd list it on a college application, but doesn't climbing count as a real sport, and how can I convince other people of this?

IMOP the general public will not acsept you as a climber until you've climbed Everest and had a bunch of people die while you were there. Sorry, it sucks to be us, but not as much as it dose to be the general public.

Climbing is a way of life
and in no way, is a waste of time!
In my experiance, the people who have
told me that I was wasting my time climbing,
backpacking, etc, were the same people
sitting around on their dead asses wasting
their lives.
Errrr! it pisses me off when I
hear that crap!
Hell yes, put that on your resume!
And dont ever listen to those who would
try to tell you otherwise.
Its your path, its your life, make it a
good one.
Rock on!
Jim.

Climbing is the greatest; maybe precisely becasue you can't put it on your resume. There's something pretty pure about it. Why do it? For the sheer fun and exhiliration. For getting up a route, finding your way, thinking it through, going where not too many others have or can go, using your body stength and skills in incredible ways; and then there's the views.
I don't think climbing is a sport (except for competitions). Climnbing is a (usually) outdoor activity, like hiking. It's the greatest. Don't give in to your Dad's belittling you. Without disrespecting him, stand your ground, or belay station! Climb on.

I rockclimb and skateboard, and this happens in both "sports". I know how you feel.

I love Ernest Hemingway's quote: "There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games."

I second that paintinhaler. It used to be that way with snowboarding untill I started to compete. The way I see it is, who cares what others think, as long as your having fun!

I am Dr. Jumar
can I play?

It pisses you off to here what?

If climbing is a sport, then baseball, golf, and all the others better get their act together because they're lame, boring, and don't challenge anyone. Who really cares if someone scores a point, I think surviving is a much better goal. That was always my gripe with football, if you're try to dominate your opponet why not use wepons.

I think climbing is definitely a sport. Its just failed to be recognized by the public however. Im happy that were a small and tight woven group though.

Climbing is both a sport and a lifestyle. Is it recognized for scholarships, and seen as a common sport, no..but if climbing is not a sport than I dont know what is. It is just as physically demanding if not more than any other sport in existence - and also requires a certain mentality level.

There are some sports that should not be considered sports, rock climbing is NOT one of them. Im suprised it isn't an olympic sport yet...... or if it is, i havent heard of it.

Is rock and ice climbing on the X games climbing? Do "climbing" movies depected by Holleywood's vertical limit climbing? Was Hitler a bad person? Was the "why are climbers so nice" post a real post? Why has X-files been on so long, if they were real FBI agents wouldn't they have found something or been reassigned by now? Why? Why? Why? Why?

amsam,
I think the answer to your post is both yes and no.

No, colleges won't offer you a scholarship to attend _and_ climb, ie, a climbing scholarship. From that perspective, it won't help you get a scholarship.

However, college admission boards absolutely look at extra-curricular activities, in combination with scholastics when determining admissions and scholarships. Their goal isn't to meet specific profiles (ie we need 2 rugby playing cellists this year), but rather to get a diverse class of well-rounded people. Some universities also stress civic, philanthropic, or environmental interests as key components of a well-rounded student.

You can absolutely demonstrate those characteristics thru involvement with climbing organizations, the local access fund, donating your time to teach youth-climbing, judge comps, etc.

If you apply at schools that do interviews, you can demonstrate your passion and presentation skills with a powerfull oration about climbing. It's so easy to get worked up and excited about describing the crux of a climb, or the challenge of long-term, focused self-improvement. You can demonstrate many of the characteristics that an admissions board will consider to be very desirable. And you can do it by following a passion.

Live your life for your passions, and the world will bend to help you.

C

It's a lifestyle. Stay close to the things that inspire you and defend them. If others try to stop you or criticize you rather than support or inspire you, pitch tent someplace else unless they change. They just have not found that one or two or several things in life that brings them constant joy and all of lifes pleasures.

Peace
