One method I use is look for sets. Like, say a guy in the Camp 4 parking lot is selling off his wall rack. And lockers are $3 or $4 bucks. I like to look for four or more identical lockers. That way, he probably didn't find four identical lockers at the base of El Cap.

If there are no signs of impact to metal parts, they're probably OK. I'd replace any perlon or webbing, no matter how clean and new it looked. Again, just don't trust any one piece of gear (except your rope, I suppose).

The best thing is to know the person that has used the equipment then you no how it has been looked after or not.

And inspect it well as well.

If its on ebay, I look at his user comments. Usually they have probably sold things in the climbing area before. If there were any negative remarks on gear he has sold, I wont buy it. I also look at pictures to get an idea.

EBAY

When buying gear from ebay make sure the seller knows what they are selling, or at least has a good reason why they don't. You don't want to buy stolen gear, its worst than cursed gear.

I am really skeptical of second hand gear.
Probably the only gear that I would take 2nd hand would be from my regular partner, but for all I know when he stores it at home is it next to that old leaking car battery?

The climbing gear is designed to keep me alive, I think my life is worth spending a few extra $$$.

I say if you buy 2nd hand be skeptical, I like the "set" comment, makes sense..

E-bay, I would not but a single picec of gear that my life depended on. I would buy a haul bag but that is about it...

More useless spray from Radistrad
