Now, I was told that the job of a spoter was to save the head of the person so they don't take a potencialy lethal blow. where their feet landed was not to be a problem feet can be fixed and usualy there is a crash pad.
This theory means that i catch the sholders and upper back of a person. But lately i have been hearing about people grabing the lowerback, hips and butt when they spot. i has woundering, When would you use that. catching at hips or lower would mean the person could flip back.
please help. i would hate to be the one who ends up being that bad belayer who causes an injury

It all depends on the position of the person.
The head is the most important. You don't want a head injury. If some one is on an overhang I spot the head and the shoulders.
Because it would do no good to spot the lower back of someone fell off an overhang. They would end up fliping on to thier head. But on a highball vertical problem I target the back and sides. I try to guide them down to the pad and keep them from hitting any rocks that are behind them.

Rock It Up!

Grabbing the butt is a spotter technique only used in the case of a female boulderer.

What i gather so far from you guys is that i use it, basicly to redirect the fall over the crash pad and away from sharp pointy rocks

i'm also going to guess that the movement is not so much a catch as in the sholders, but also a push.

please tell me if i'm wrong or right

Just like my fellow male climbers, I always go for the butt if its a nice looking female Hehe, im not kidding lol...well maybe a little bit. Anyways, when your spotting someone, you usually reactly involuntarily. You dont think about how you are going to redirect their fall, you just do it. There is no thought process when your spotting a falling climber. No?

i'm still a little confused
i figure that if some one comes of a high one, if i were to catch them vie their but there is a chance i could still flip them bcakwards. this could resault in some painfull head on head contact. wat is the technique exactly?

You don't grab their butt, you push toward the pad. You don't try to stop the falling, just redirect it.
