I have heard of stories when people are starting to lead where they zone out on the rock and don't know what to do, i.e. freak out on the rock and freeze up. Has anyone ever heard of this and as someone who is starting to lead how can I control that? What can I do?

Top rope enough first to become comfortable with what you are doing. The last thing you want to do is make a bad mistake on lead,I've seen people drop the rope when they go to thread the anchors, backclip the rope, etc.Make sure you are with an experienced climber and get them to explain everything well. Then get on the sharp end and enjoy the "PUCKER FACTOR" as Rrradam like to call it.
