As for types, I always stick with 5.10. Their rubber is the best, and the shoes themselves will last. I had a bad experience with Boreal, and my feet are too wide for the rest. Mad Rock has some decently priced slippers that I have heard good things about. Just depends what you want them for. Comfort on roped climbs? Stick to velcro or lace ups. Usually La Sportiva and 5.10 are the best in this catagory. Bouldering or hard sport routes? Go for a tight-fitting slipper. You want your toes to curl. REI or WHole Earth will have staff that can help you with the sizing and type. Good luck. Check on texasclimbers.com if you are looking for partners. As for San Marcos, there are no outdoor stores. Just a Coleman outlet.
