I ran across this today in a book and thought it was worth sharing.

In life-threatening emergency situations, the shift in consciousness from time to presence sometimes happens naturally. The personality that has a past and a future momentarily recedes and is replaced by an intense conscious presence, very still but very alert at the same time. Whatever response is needed then arises out of that state of consciousness.
The reason why some people love to engage in dangerous activities, such as mountain climbing, car racing, and so on, although they may not be aware of it, is that it forces them into the now - that intensely alive state that is free of time, free of problems, free of thinking, free of the burden of the personality. slipping away from the present moment even for a second may mean death. Unfortunately, they come to depend on a particular activity to be in that state.
-Eckhart Tolle

And, of course, if chicks dig it.

well, if you live life to the fullest, like myself, and immerse yourself always in the here and now, floating with the ebb and flow of time, not too fast and not too slow, but at just the same exact pace the almost now becomes the present and then the just now, all senses open and receptive to all that is around, this of course is old news, and you'd know that it too has its downsides, such as the constant attention to make sure you're not going a little too fast or a little too slow. if you read this in less than 53 seconds, you're hurrying through life not appreciating all that is life. if more than, well, you're living life too slow, letting life pass you by, and you'll soon hear people telling you to please live life to the fullest. very soon. like right now

I climb to get away from the wolves. Do you see them? They carry around small book bags and wear red socks to keep silent on wooden floors. The wolves smirk and laugh when they see me. How I am afraid of them.

I climb to get above the rising lava, too. See the pale light it is giving off in the night? I see it every night when I wake up half asleep, wondering if the lava will cover me while I am in bed. Will I wake up in time?! I don't know.

I also climb to get away from the green fog. Can you smell it? It is everywhere! I smell the fog long before it arrives. Small ghosts fly in and out of the fog singing Britney Spears songs. I fear the singing ghosts like no other fear. My only escape is to climb.

Climb higher! Get awayyyyy!

I agree, there is a feeling of the present that I normally dont experience in other activities, when Im at work Im probably thinking about what I will do when Im out, or in the traffic jam, or anywhere....
When I climb I live the ¨here¨, the ¨now¨. Every breath in state of consciousnes, trying to be aware of every move, handhold foothold, look up look down, breathe, change feet... I love that feeling. That is how life should be lived. Enjoying every moment.

You know about the shrooms! Throw them to the wolves and run. This works most of the time.

Hm. If life were perfect, without discouragement, without difficulty, without...well, you know what's on this ball of dirt, hurtling itself around a star with an unseen force we cannot control, strengthen, or embrace...

Would there be a point to climbing, really? :D

I like the solitude.
Gravity is the love mother earth exerts on me.
And we are always flirting.
When it is just me hugging planet earth and hanging.
I feel as if I am a part of the rock.
Some days she denies me,
other days she lets me shine for just a moment.
She coaxes me to grab on and weight it.
But, she doesn’t even know I am here.
The wind blows, as it to pull me off,
but it to doesn’t know I am here.
The rain falls and soaks me,
but it just wants to water the plants and animals.
I define our existence.
But only for the short while I am here.
We laugh and play and I tease her love for me,
and sometimes, if I am not too careful,
she reminds me not to play foolishly with her love.
I acknowledge our existence for the moment and
together we are all alive.
She will stand for many millennia.
So, like the wildflower growing in the crack,
I am just here with no real purpose
Except to share our existence for a very short while.
Having no meaning, only to share each other.
She keeps me here forever pulling on me.
When I fall asleep she keeps me cuddled with her embrace and
When she decides to take me,
I’ll embrace her love because we have always been a part of the same.

(Of course I believe you *do* have a very unique purpose. You're the only you that ever existed.)

Thanks Beaner!

These are some of the lyrics to a song I wrote that I am trying to musically arrange right now. May take a while though, but it is a fun project to work on until better weather comes in.

The quote that began this thread from Eckhart Tolle is great. I think it might come from his book "the Power of Now" which is highly recommended as a book that can help you get in touch with yourself and see things clearly.

I wrote a long piece on why I climb. It's in the rc article archives and on my site but it's too long to post in this thread

Click here to read my article on the rewards of climbing.

Peace

Increasingly beggining to understand why. I climb because of everything the rock and mountains have to offer. The feeling of topping out somewhere. A first ascent on a jungle crag cleaning up boulders and rocks and trees. Climbing can take you all over the world and offer you many things mentally and physically. I think the technical aspect of climbing is highly fascinating. I love how with some nuts and cams you can work a rock that has never been climbed. Keeps you in touch with yourself and the outdoors. Something fascinating about the bond of a climber and a rock... One thing I find best about the sport is when all the minute factors that make a climb, fall together and work with one-another in symbiosity and creates this sort of perfected energy if you know what I mean... everything feels smooth and pure. There is the mental challenge - when you push through something you have fear in or doubt and you make it through... few thigns can match to that
