I've never been fat, well, actually I'd always been extremely skinny (until I kept eating like I was running 9 miles a day after track ended, but that's a different story) but last summer I gained some weight, more than I wouldve liked to... then started climbing, and ppl say I look great, but I don't weigh any less! I realize I'm replacing fat with muscle, but it would be nice to loose some weight too. Other than climbing and lifting, what are some good exercises you all do to keep your weight down. By the way, I get BAD shin splints from running, so if I can avoid that, great. Thanks Becky

Running is great for fitness and weight reduction. But lots of runners get injured. I've replaced running with cycling and hiking. Both are great cardio and fat burners. They are also good preparation for burly approaches-which are basically hard hikes.

serious hiking is just that. serious. get some good poles and hit the hills. maybe its not as fast to get you winded as running, but you are gonna be blasted after an hour if youre not used to it.

When I hit the gym with a goal of weight management in mind,I hit that ellipitcal trainer as much as possible - low impact and I have no idea why, but it's easy and burns a ton of calories (can set it on the highest setting and go for like an hour). Biking is great, too. If you don't have a bike, get one - use it to get around town. Weight loss is about eating less and excercising more.

like gds said cardio exercises should help maybe you can look at a womens' mag or fitness magazine... I think you'd probably want to consider your diet and exercise combination. there are probably books (sports nutrition and diet)/websites for more details.

You can avoid shin splints with the right shoes for your feet (go to a shoe store with real runners) and by proper stretching. Weight bearing exercises are the best for losing weight. So, running is better than, say, biking or swimming for weight loss, although those are great for cardio fitness. Combining weight training with carido exercise speeds the metabolism for a longer time than either alone. So it's best to lift and run (for example) on the same day. If you can't solve your shin splints problem try a stairmaster type machine where you can still be weight-bearing but lower impact.

Here is a resource to use to help with your shin splints. The link is to an informational site dedicated to running ultras. The people who posted the information have the experience and education to justify their views. http://www.ultrunr.com./ Personally, I do "toe lift" exercises any time I think of it during the day. Now I don't suffer from shin splints any more. The fact that I do a fair amount of downhill running on pavement and I no longer suffer from shin splints speaks well for the effectiveness of the exercise. If you no longer want to run and have access to a gym, hunt down their rower and park yourself on it for a while. Great full body, low-impact exercise that burns huge numbers of calories.

Spinning is my cardio recommendation. Getting a 35 pound fly wheel moving for 45 minutes three times a week made me lose at least 15 pounds in about 4 months (wow, that was two years ago; sorry side track thought). now i am working on my "vanity pounds" as some commercials like to call it. just two cautions... never try to stop instantly (you'll break your knees) and buy a gel seat... your bum will be sore after the first couple sessions. dont worry about the numbers on the scale. i am going through the same thing... i weigh the same even when i kick up the workouts, but i look better in my jeans, and my arms are getting toned. so, by that i know i am getting fitter. hope this helps!!
