Toy Biner Tested

Ok, I know this has been done before by someone, somewhere, but I thought it would be fun to do it, so a couple buddies and I rigged a 33 gallon trash can up and hung it from a toy biner rated to 150lbs. we filled the can with 29 gallons of water, then started adding weights. the biner held strong with a static load of 279.46 pounds. Since we ran out of weights, we decided to drop test it, and it blew on the second drop of about 8 inches. The spine and the hinge pin blew. We also did one with a toy biner off of a pair of leki poles, it didn't have any kind of latch or hook on the gate and just noodled out and straightened when dropped on.

It's official then. Don't use trash cans for climbing either.

But it does seem to add a dynamic dimension!
Perhaps the combination of a failing biner depositing you into a trash can of water would work.
Do you need to bring a snorkel?

My 45 lbs. border collie can straighten out on of those toy biners on her chain, if she really wants what is out of reach.

I'll see if i can find the biners we used and get a pic of them, it's really quite impressive to see the difference in the designs. And yes, this is relatively worthless info.

It's official then. Don't use border collies for climbing. They can straighten out your gear.

We can't really make it official since the border collie is a 'mix'.

It's an evil rumor right up there with microcracks in dropped gear that you shouldn't use border collies for climbing. But hey dude, it's your life so slam in a collie if you want, just remember I told you so!

Last Border Collie I placed had a bit of a tendency to "walk", I won't use one again.

well, there ok to use, ok, coz I think there are just domestic large mexican flea bag rats that shiver to much. Actually, if you can find them wild in the desert they are not bad with some BBQ sauce.

You hang a 45lb border collie on your rack and it automatically increases the difficulty of the climb by 3 grades....4 if it is biting you.

MH--the 5.9 climber without the collie

Try German shepherds, they are engineered to much better tolerances.
