Wouldn't it be nice if there was one place to go that would show you all the important information about all the cams on the market including, size, color, expansion range, strength, weight and price? You could use it to help fill in gaps in your rack, pick a replacement for a lost or damaged cam, decide on a reasonable bid for gear on e-bay or just to build a rack. Or, if you're a gear queer like me, you could just gawk at it. Well, I put one together and have it available for anyone that wants it, so just e-mail me. I don't have a website to post it on, but if you do...feel free to post it after I e-mail it to you. My address is http://jesseb@bellfs.com.

I've never seen anything as comprehensive as what I put together. Maybe I'm reinventing the wheel, maybe not.

Well, the Mountain Gear catalog has all of this. It's nice, for sure. Can't say that its a bad thing to have online, though.

clyde soles has the table you're talking about. His username on this site is csoles, I think you can access the table through his profile.

Clyde Soles has the usable ranges for all cams on his site. That is much more useful than the absolute ranges published by the manufacturer. You may find gaps that you didn't know about.

hey sounds cool can u post a link to it or anything? or email it to me? i d be interested - would be cool to have this option available as another view in the Gear Guide currently we can only sort by brand, model, price and user rating - it would be ideal if we could work in other options for specific tech spec comparison thanks! Somehow I missed the humor in that as well. This guy thought he was doing everyone a service. Regardless of whether the info was previously availible, he put forth the effort and offered to share the info. That deserves an A+ in my book any way you look at it.

so this one time, at climb camp... i was down to my last two cams. the crack was .54 inches in width (i know cause i brought my calipers). I could place either my trango flex cam yellow #1, or my metolius tcu blue #1. They both fit quite well, in fact. Lucky for me, I also knew that my next placement would be .64 inches in width. Since clyde told me my trango flex cam tops out at .58 inches in usable range, I know that it will not work at the next placement. I use the trango for this placement, saving my tcu for the next. Good thing I always bring my calipers to the crag, so I have no question that my piece will fit. (Fugg'it. Slam it, set it, clip it, go.)

Well, its sort of outdated, but I put this page together a while back. I meant to put in more info (like the stuff from Clyde's chart), but then I lost my job, and spent all my time climbing, instead of programming.. :P

I wasn't previously aware of Clyde's chart...it's great. It is better than mine in that it has "usable" expansion ranges. I'm going to try to re-organize my chart to be ordered by expansion range...that will make it a little different. Neph-wow, good job on your program. That is pretty cool.

Is it me? or are there alot of anal retentive posts on this thread. Most of us just look at the crack, look down at our gear and pick a piece that fits, tables are a bit like rules, pretty close to useless on a crag. I suppose they would be of some use to a weenie who just liked to collect gear and spout off about what fits where, but grow up guys and get out climbing, get dirty and come home smelly. Get REAL.

Keith-the chart is not intended to be used on the crag...did you really think that was the idea? If you read my firs post, you'll see that it is meant for someone looking for gear. Let's say you lose your #3 Camalot and aren't sure that you want to spend that kind of dough again. You can look at the chart and quickly identify what cams have a similar range and what the price is. As I said before, if you don't find it useful, just ignore the thread.

Right you are, I wholeheartedly withdraw any criticism of the table, used for that purpose, I just thought I saw it as a gear freaks bragging chart, I been watching too many RC.com threads, need to get out more
