I'm going to UVic this fall, and I was wondering what the climbing scene is like for those without wheels.. I read about some climbing near Esquimalt, but how far is it from the university? Just want to know if it's worth my while to pick up a dirt bike or not.. Thanks..

Duuuuuuuudue! Victoria eh'. Climbing? My advice, save your money, put off getting a bike, and buy a climbing pass at the local gym. Climbing in Victoria is so bad it borders on embarrassing. Stuff that wouldn't be given mention in other area guide books is given three stars in the local guide. The climbing sucks so bad it pains me to hear your considering moving there. But hey, higher education is important, and the gym in Victoria is great. In my opinion it's the best in BC.

People like to whine about Fleming.....whatever....it's close to town, it's sunny....next to the water......climb it. 1/2 to 45min. out of town and you have some great climbing at Wells and MacDonald. The gym is fun too....meet some peeps and snag a ride to the next outing. Anyway Flemong is in Esquimalt.....it's pretty close to downtown......20 min. from Uvic. Dirtbike would be good regardless of the climbing if you're living out near the school.

Peace

There's enough fun climbs outside of Victoria to keep you busy for awhile. Then the drives get longer and longer and the hike in too. Some decent climbs near town, but most are small. At least you won't be waiting in line. You're pooched without a car....stuck at an expensive indoor gym. Nice scenery though. Meeting climbers at UVic is pretty easy...you can't miss em slacklining between the trees.

Didn't think Crag X was that expensive, but it does look (on the map) to be a ways from the campus.. It's too bad, I was kindof hoping UVic would have a couple of nice boulders like SFU does, nothing like a quick send between classes.. Thanks for the info though. Might have to take up slacklining.

There IS some decent buildering right on campus at UVic. Check out the cafeteria in among the residents buildings.
Fleming is not bad. If it was in my backyard I wouldn't complain... it is a bit of a bike ride out to Esquamton from campus, however...
Crag X is a rad gym. Expensive? Don't you know what you have there?Good scene, not crowded at all, and great route-setting.
It is $12 for a student daypass. I went to some gyms in the USA that were $20 US for a day pass! Are the Vancouver gyms not charging $17 plus tax for a daypass? Plus in Van, when it is busy you have to wait in line to get on a route with all the crowds!
Sure Crag X is a little more than some of those little dirtbag gyms with a few mattresses on the cement floors, but you get what you pay for.
It is not the biggest, but Crag X is probably the best gym in Canada that I have been to...

Fleming is the ultimate bouldering gym... with real rock god forbid.. and free.. and in town. 10 min drive from uvic.. and on the beach... ya that sucks.

ya and the hundereds of problems there... they've only developed a bunch of insanely strong climbers that developed squamish bouldering... it must really suck i forgot..

ya i hate the view as well... who wants to climb at a beach anyways...

it is what it is ... and its hella better than crag X..

how did i miss read something? i read the sign a few times a week.. unlike you i'm sure .. but again..actually climbing at flemming i know the history here and you do not.. or would you care to elaborate on some of the incidents that caused the sign.. .? you must know them correct?
you must also know that hundreds of people climbing over 8 years of non enforcement render your little arguement mute. so try again..

and who said i only climb at fleming???? please quote me... but i don't need to spray about it now do i ..
but I in fact do climb at fleming for some years and hence unlike your sorry ass.. know the situation... you obviously do not.. or would you like to pull some other 8 year old crap off the net... you don't know shit about fleming obviously and you obviously feel foolish for having paid the one time you went...

"Ten years in one spot, eh? I bet you haven't amounted to much."

or i just live in that city.. and what exactly should i amount to??? i like to boulder and flemming has great bouldering live with it.. it will be ok..

"I wouldn't be at all surprised if you still live with your parents. I can picture you in your parent's basement furtively sifting through your collection of child pornography. Maybe you're one of those completely dysfunctional types who likes to dress in women's clothing. Wait a second, CFB Esquimalt is in Victoria, and it is a navy base, isn’t it? Now I understand your fascination with the boardwalk, and your penchant for Fleming Beach. You hope to catch the eye of some dashing young subaltern, and play ‘ram the torpedo into tube two!’ with him. Run along to Fleming beach (or Flaming Beach as it pertains to you, you little flamer!), queen of the crag, and repeat some more of those problems that you mastered ages ago for the benefit of the on-lookers. Your imbecilic pronouncements, and self-congratulatory epistles on RC.com are an endless source of mirth, and I look forward to your next dispatch with an unbridled delight.

wow.. and your complete lack of arguement is also an endless source of mirth.... but attack away "retard"... cause you know me so well.. i mean you know my screen name and everything .. preach on...

and to get the thread on track Feral .. if you like bouldering come to flemming and people will show you around and you will have an endless supply of problems..the #26 bus will take you a short walk down lampson st to fleming from uvic.. or bike in 20min ..if you are fast
and you won't have to pay..
