http://www.sierratradingpost.com (My favorite - limited sizes and styles though)
http://www.rei-outlet.com (occasionally good deals on closeouts/blems)
http://www.northernmountain.com (great selection and usually lots of deals on blems, not to mention good prices on most gear)

I'm a fan of acmeclimbing.com, shoreline mtn. products, and mountain gear.

Know before you buy cheap gear online that you get what you pay for. I would recommend spending a little bit more money on some good quality gear, because you won't be busy upgrading your gear one year from now because your gear just doesn't cut it.

Your local gear shop should be the best resourse to buy cheap gear, they can give you advise on what to byt and best of all you can try everithing before paying (you break it, you buy it!)!!!

gear express is nice, but i'm a huge fan of moosejaw. at first I thought they just had a few good deals on some stuff, but I looked around on their site a litle more and they are a truly awesome company. for example, you get points for buying stuff (10 points for every dollar you spend), and then you can use the points to buy more stuff. and the stuff you get with the points isn't just moosejaw t-shirts and frisbees, its real stuff. Pretty much anything on their website you can get with money or with points. And you can get points about 30 other ways besides spending money. For example, you get 100 points just for writing a review of something on their website. also they price match, which means that if you see the gear you want somewhere else on the web for less than moosejaw has it for, mooosejaw will sell it to you for that price. that way, you get the gear for less and you get the points that you can use to get more gear. In case you can't tell, i really like moosejawSmile

try spadout.com it will basically give you all the major online stores (mountaingear, moosejaw, gearexpress, bentgate, acmeclimbing) and it will compare all and tell you who is the cheapest and also tell you if you get free shipping, coupons, and price change

See all of the above recommendations if you want discounts on gear, I'm sure any one of them will be fine. Please know, however, that getting the right gear is way more important than getting the best deal. A good deal on gear that's a pain isn't all that much of a deal at all. Climbing is a (relatively) inexpensive sport, if you want cheap, take up running!

Best of luck and welcome to the sport,
Matt

PS-Don't be the guy that sucks up an hour of your local gear shop's time and then goes and buys online. Equates to theft in my opinion and is all too common.

I agree, and MooseJaw's customer service is fantastic. I can't recommend it enough.

http://www.rockandsnow.com/store/

Rock and Snow in New Paltz, NY (GUNKS!) has been having some kick ass gear of the week sales at their website. (25% off C4 Camalots last week). You can support your local store and get some internet bargains all at once!

I've never found ems to be anything but overpriced. Maybe it's just the market in this area and the fact that they're the *only* local place to buy climbing gear, but their prices suck.

really? everything at ems is msrp. plus there's a metric butt ton of sales all the time. Like now, ice tools and boots are 20% off.

Maybe it's the market around here. I've found it to be at the bare minimum msrp in the store, usually msrp+10%
There are no other retail stores that sell the variety of gear they do. There are paddle shops, there are clothing stores, no climbing stores at all.. Retail chains leave a lot up to the local stores. If the market allows higher prices, then by all means - charge more.

I do find that interesting. EMS is the third outdoors shop I've worked in, my first was a mom and pop climbing.backoacking shop, the second a 4 store chain, now EMS. All over New england too. EMS has the best prices i've seen from all three.
