Yes, I know I'm asking for trouble, but I was hoping to get some recommendations on quality morning shaded routes. Would prefer to get in 1 or 2 multipitch moderate trad routes (i.e. cat in the hat), but would be happy with knowing where the shaded sport climbs lie. I'm comfortable leading up to ~5.8 trad and 5.10 sport. Thanks for your help!

We were just there yesterday and Monday. Monday was 101 in Vegas and we did Chrimson Chrysalis. We were at the gate at 6 am, so the walk in wasn't bad at all. The route itself was mostly in the shade, and the few pitches that weren't were high enough that the breeze kept us pretty cool. It would actually pay to be slowish, as the whole thing went shady from like 1:00. In any case, the temps were almost ideal in the shade and no one was around. Yesterday (high of 94 in Vegas), we were in the Black Corridor from 6:30-9 am: perfect temps (but I think it's not a good time of year to sleep in). We ran into another party that did Dark Shadows (p 1-4) on Monday and they also had a great time in nice temps. Red Rocks seemed to be considerably cooler than Vegas, as we crossed highway 215 the temps seemed to rise by 10 degrees. The campground's closed, we had to go to the north strip to get a cheapy motel. The Econolodge on Las Vegas Blvd just south of Charleston was $38 with tax for what seemed the only non-sleazy option in the area. For a few more $ you could probably get a downmarket casino like the Sahara, but we didn't want to hassle with schlepping our stuff through a casino (lookit us, we're ROCK-CLIMBERS!). Have a good time.

I would say check out the Mount Charleston area. I believe it is up at around 9,000 ft so it would be a lot cooler than Red Rocks. At least you could probably get your sport fix up there. I have never been but the TR's from some friends made it sound pretty fun. I'm pretty sure that the guidbook that covers these areas is called Islands in the Sky.

Black Corridor is in the shade almost all day if you don't mind lines...and Mass Production Wall at the Sandstone Quarry is shaded almost all day. Don't climb the first route in though; there is a bolt missing on the route. Blue Skies!
