At the end of June my wife and I will be in Banff for a wedding. I'll have an afternoon or so free and would like to find an inexpensive outfitter that can handle a relative rookie when it comes to outdoor climbing. I used to be the climbing wall manager at a local sporting goods store so I am great at knots and an excellent belayer (grigri and ATC) and a competent gym climber. I have also started to put together my trad rack with BD stoppers, hexes, and 2 camalots. For rope I've got a Beal 10.5 Top Gun. Sorry, got a bit off subject there. Does any one have a suggestionas to who to go with or where to look? Thanks in advance, fallingup PS, gohighgodeep, e-mail me ASAP

Hey fallingup; I'm not sure what you mean...are you looking for a guide service??? If so, and you are only looking to go out for an afternoon, I'd suggest just picking up a Sport Climbs in the Canadian Rockies guide book or just go to one of the local crags, IE. Grassi Lakes, Cougar Canyon, Heart Creek etc. and just start climbing. If you have that much gym experience you should be able to handle these crags. They are all within about 15 minutes of Banff and close to the highway, and have hundreds of routes in the 5.7 - 5.10 range. Talk to one of the climbing shops in Banff, ie. Mountain Magic and ask them for tips or suggestions where to go, and even topos. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

There are two gear stores in Banff, Mountain Magic and Monods, either should be able to hook you up with a guide if that's what you're looking for. There's a Valhalla Pure in Canmore that can do the same. You might also want to check out http://www.acmgguides.com/ where you can search for an ACMG certified guide.
