Intersted in helping creating a guide for Hospital Boulders?

My GF and I, climb very often at The Hospital Boulders. Right now, we're working on 2 different problems that we've created (well.. we think we did.. )

Since alot of climbers knows and visit this place, it would be cool if we could trade problems, creating a mini guide, making it a bit more official, ratings and all..

I'm ready to go out and take pictures of the whole crag and sketches, working on a web site..

Anyone else interested? Any Ideas?

-Eric

Count me in. I'd also really like to see what problems others have created out there.

While I'm really into the idea of cleaning the place up I wonder how much good it will do as long as the local 'kids' keep drinking and playing there. Not that I like the idea of landing on broken glass, used condoms, trash and that skanky mattress!!

Similarly, anybody have a topo for the new boulder problems over at The Shrine they'd be willing to share?

As for Hospital Boulders, I've only been there a couple times but also "created" a bunch of problems. I wouldn't be surprised if the problems you've come up with have already been done many times before by others.

In any case, a topo for HB is a great idea. Don't expect I can contribute much, however.

I really like the ideas of cleaning the place! That will sure be a hell of a job, but I guess the place deserve it.

If weather permits, I'll be at there tomorrow night (may 28th) around 6-7 if anyone's interested I'll start the sketches and pictures, and I'll have my gear to climb.

Here's the directions (taken from the route database)

Directions:

Take highway 50 in Hull head east. Take the exit for Boulevard La Verendrye and head east along Boulevard La Verendrye. Turn left on Boulevard De L'hopital. Park at a retaining wall (it looks like steps that go no where) walk along the wall till you get to a fence go though the gap in the fence and you are there.

the Stepsto the crag is at corner of de l'hopital/cote-des-neiges and Mount-Royal on right hand side.

Hope to see you all there tomorrow!

- Eric

Note : I'll have a map drawn with exact location by tomorrow in ths thread and in the route database

Where are the boulders at The Shrine

I have been there climbing, and noticed a couple between the crag and the main path - but i didnt think they were worth the trip out there for.

Anyone have specific directions

There is a topo posted on the bulletin board at VR. Otherwise just walk around the bouldering area or ask other climbers and you'll find them.

If you go there right now make sure you shower in some industrial strength DEET.. That place (shrine) is a blackfly/moskito factory. Its definetly off my dance card now until august.

Your call.

I was bouldering there yesterday and had no problems. Lots of moskitos but the bug spray kept them off - think I may have gotten one bite all afternoon. Just put it on in the parking lot and didn't worry about it afterwards.

For those interested, it's maybe a 25 minute approach, well past the turnoff at the first cairn for the crag. Just follow the path and keep to the right. Only trick is knowing where to cross the creek (two logs make a little bridge).

I was at down under sunday as well at around 1 pm. The bugs weren't an issue. Nice breeze.

Maybe we met each other there?

I was climbing with a couple of fellas. Shane and group threw up sausages for us.

Good idea, but to make it worthwhile you should include all the bouldering areas in Ottawa in your online guide:

- Hospital Boulders
- Shrine Boulders
- Western Cwm Boulders
- maybe even the Hogsback Boulder
- anything else I missed

Start with just directions and maps (like the one you did for the Hospital Boulders) and then add more detailed area overviews and topos as you get a chance to visit all the area, or as other people contribute them.

Unfortunately I can't help, but I'll offer free advice!

It's possible that I just missed you. We left close to that time and walked over to Eastern Block for an hour or so.
I was at my car at 2 so i'm guessing I missed you.

I'd really like to have some examples of bouldering topos. I'm still wondering how to present it. Do you think I should detail it as a trad topo?

If you have any suggestions, web site or books to suggest, that would be very appreciated

here are a few examples of bouldering topos:
http://www.drtopo.com/ (check out the Val David guide)
http://www.glenbouldering.com/problems.php3
http://www.newenglandbouldering.com/media/mckensie.htm
http://www.newenglandbouldering.com/...ulders/Boulders.html

the best way to present it might be to detail it like a trad topo because you aren't working with a set of boulders but with a short band of clifs... that's my 2 cents.

Dr Topo should be putting up a topo for the shrine boulders soon. I was talking with guy that made the topo that was hanging at VR and he said that he had sent it to them and they were going to put it up soon.

When I was at Val-David last weekend I saw someone with a guide to the new section of boulders there "Le Hommes".

They have them for sale at the information centre for 3.00 he said. It was closed when we left though.

Someone should throw that up on drtopos too. I heard rumor its supposed to be going there.
