You don't have to look for a landing spot this way. Just lean back and relax. Prepare for impact.

A strange story, told to me by my friend Eric, that relates: There's a big quartzite boulder at the base of Mt Olympus in Salt Lake City which I believe is called Pete's Rock. It ain't much, but there's few boulder problems there and it's possible to traverse back and forth to get a pump: something to do once and awhile on a sunny, winter day to take in some fresh air between classes at the U of U. So one day, Eric tells me, he was out there bouldering around and saw this chick working the traverse. Certainly not a highball traverse, but a little pumpy and high enough to make you kinda nervous about flopping off: this was in the old days before crash pads existed. Anyways this chick was all dressed up in knee pads and elbow pads and heavy clothes and a helmet (were there even shoulder pads?) while she traversed around. And then, every couple of minutes, she would come screaming down off the traverse, bounce off the rocks below, laugh strangely, dust herself off and begin traversing again. Apparently this went on repeating itself for sometime, until Eric finally got so wigged out he couldn't take it any more and he left to go home.

In reply to: What am I doing wrong? You are wearing your crashpad on your back instead of placing it below you in the fall zone.
