After reading MANY MANY time "Climbing : From Gym to Crag" by Lewis and Cauthorn, I couldn`t find the answer ( either in the forums.. )

They show a technique to clean and rappel a top rope from a fixed anchor ( 2 bolt, chain and laplink). Good!! I can do that (well I think.. But now.. how about retriving the rope? I assume that this technique is there to show you how to rappel without having to walk back up to the top to remove quickdraws, biners rope and others.. ( lets says you rappel from a 300' cliff, you have to do it in 3-4 part right?)

back to the question..
how do you get your rope back form the top?? pull on it and have the rope fall from 70-80 feet?

.. also.. is there any other good book on "from gym to crag" topic??

- a confused newbie

Falling rope does nothing. We all pull as described.

Yes, you pull the rope down from 70-80 feet or whatever your climbing. If the rope is anchored to the rock with bolts and your quickdraws, you want them back before you rappel. Its kind of tricky and you need someone to teach you. I had someone teach me. You have climb to anchors, transfer your weight off the rope and onto the anchors, by clipping into the draws into harness. Then you can put rope thru rap anchors and take your draws down while your weight is on the anchors + draws not rope. Very tricky and some people have gaps of "safeness" when they transfer. By not have rope on them or anchored. Ask a gym or pro on how to learn this. Don't take our word for this. But, I think your ? was about the rope.

But no, the rope falling 90-100 feet will do nothing. Just try to keep it out tha mud, dirt, and sticks.

Thee is also the book Toproping in the How to Climb series published by Falcon. I'm not sure who the author is.

its a hell of a lot easier to pull the rope down to the bottom then it is to pull it up and coil it from the top
