I corresponded with Heidi Schewel who works for the Forest Service up on Mt. Lemmon today regarding when the closures that were put into effect due to the Aspen fire might be lifted. Here's her response: Jerry, we do not have a definite date at this time. Our trails crews are working on trails, and removing "hazard trees." We want to get the area open just as soon as we can. We are hopeful that it will be in the near future, but I can't give you a date. The Special Closure Order will be terminated, and trails, climbing areas, the entire area which is now closed will all be opened at the same time. (Please keep in mind that some of the climbing areas are closed from March 15 through June 30 for nesting birds.) I think we're all anxious to be able to get back into the areas we are so fond of. Footnote: I was up at Lemmon yesterday, and despite the fact that it was above 100 in town, the temps at 7500' were quite nice. x

This heat is cooking my brain, and I'm looking for some cooler temps as relief. After all, I ain't got but a few brain cells left. ;)

"Quite nice" can run from low 70s to mid-80s, give or take, during the summer months. And if that ain't quite nice, you must be spoiled ;) A few weeks in Phoenix or lowland Tucson should cure anybody of that though! I wanna check out the Aspen Loop crags and Middle Earth. Steep is good. Slab is bad.

If by "define" you mean "quantify" as in degrees Farenheit, I can't help you. I didn't bring my thermometer, and there are, so far as I've been able to ascertain, no weather reports available for the mountain. I would guesstimate that we were in the low to mid 80's... We didn't get there till about !0:30 so if you hit it real early, it might even be in the 50's or 60's... Hope that helps.

I've been meaning to ask the FS about when things would be open. BTW, people are going to Middle Earth regularly (it's one of the few decent places to go right now). And the Aspen Loop Crag (I think Tony would like people to call it The Steep) is a PILE.
