Hey! i was wandering when you are in a roped climbing comp if you can rest on the rope? (sitting back with maybe just your feet on the wall) Cos i was in a local climbing comp and you had to just climb without any help from the toprope.

No, you can't. The rope is there for safety, and a way to get down. Not to be laying around on. You need to climb without the use of the rope, you will get stronger.

hanging on the rope is no-no even if you aren't in a comp you hold on to the wall until your muscles give out from exhaustion. when i started climbing my belayer would start to lower me as soon as he felt my weight on the rope. needless to say i learned fast

absulutely not!
i know if you do that in the USCCA you get a technical called on you and it counts for a fall. its cheating. a climb doesnt count unless you climb it the whole way without using anything else like ropes to help you

no, you cant.
work on finding good rests, some of the comps have routes that are really long so you should find ways to rest so you dont get tired really fast. and dont get flashed pumped.

i agree with bigevilgrape, you cant say that youve managed a climb if you had a rest on the rope! Thats where the satisfaction is, having completed it with no help at all, it was a fair question though

Thats the thing, you could either back down from a hard move and be lowered, or just go for it. If you make it, good for you, if you don't, well at least you go out with some glory. Push it to the end.

If anyone has a tendency to use the rope to hang on, you definately should try a self-belayed route. They're awesome in my opiion because you can't use the rope at ALL to help you.
