have you ever made the mistake of climbing with a wedding ring on. i generally remember to take mine off before we get to the crag. but i forgot the other day and i alsmost got myself in trouble. i slid my hand into a crack to do a fingerlock and i felt my ring sieze up on the rock. after a brief strugle it came loose but that would have sucked if i had taken a fall. i think i will just get a tatoo of a ring so i dont have to wory about it.

Don't wear rings, but I've got to admit it gives me the screaming heebie-jeebies when I see other people climbing with them!

Another thing I hate is when you see beginners at the gym sticking fingers into bolts when they get stuck. No!

I wear my super james bondish ring on my necklace- it has a hidden latch system that opens the ring up like a locking carabiner- but in micro proportions. I still scratch it every time I go to the gym-first move , I hear a *clink*..then remember to move it to the necklace.

I, too, nearly lost my finger in a similar incident. Took a pretty good fall and just as I was leaving the rock, my ring briefly caught on something - luckily it let loose before ripping my finger off. Only took that once to learn - it ALWAYS comes off before I start now.

Besides getting your arse kicked by the wife for scratching the hell out of your ring, you can easily get it caught and lose that finger. NEVER wear rings while climbing.

About a year and a half ago, I saw a mechanic jump off of a military vehicle and "POP!". He can only count to 9 now.

Had a similar incident between my ring and a crack. Safe to say that I will never wear mine again while climbing.

Mick,
Know what you mean. Ripped a great flapper on my ring finger on a small flake once. Only problem is that after 30 years married I have to concsiously remind myself to take it off and then I better remember to put it back on before meeting the wife!

I'd have to agree that the safest thing (both for your hand and for the ring) is to take it off. But, for those not inclined to do so, try wrapping your wedding ring in about 4-5 layers of adhesive tape, making sure the ring is completely covered over. This will help prevent it from snagging on stuff, and also protect the ring's surface.

i have a biner on my harness just for putting my rings onto. (for climbing in the gym, anyway)

like most of you, i don't remember until the first couple moves... and i don't normally wear a necklace when i'm climbing, so i load all that onto my utility biner.

Having seen a guy strip the flesh from his finger onboard ship (while in the Corps) I always take it off when in doubt.

i have gotten into the habit of doing the jewelry strip down before i do anything nasty like climbing, painting, or riding. If i accidently leave my ring on when i go climbing i do what jess does and stick it on a 'biner

I crunched my ring a finger jam once...took about qa half hour after the climb to get it off. Needless to say, I ended up have to buy a replacement...and even now the new one looks like the wheel on a mountain bike. wobble wobble.

Oh, I also saw this guy stick his hand in a high power radio to make an adjustment...his ring became a permanent part of his finger..melted it right to the skin when he touched a tuning inductor. Owweee!

I didn't realize when i first started climbing that my ring would be a hazard. Then one day at the gym, while i was climbing a crack, i heard some people who were watching me call me a stupid ass and say something about never wearing a ring to climb. Now i forget to put it on when i come home.. My wife talks shmack, says i take it off so i can pick up on hottie climbing bettys.

frawg,

Your wife isn't completely off base. Although I'm sure you're not guilty, I know one 'married man' who does not keep his mind totally on the rock while out climbing.

Earlier, bigman talked about seeing a guy strip the flesh from his finger in reference to ring trauma. If that's the case, that married man I referred to earlier, should wear his wedding band on one of his OTHER APPENDAGES!

In my particular case, my wife is way off base.. Whilst climbing bettys are all good to look at or whatever, i'm not a skeeze. I'm working on getting the woman into climbing.. even if she just wants to rappel, or even be my belayeron toprope.. This would probably make her feel better about me removing my band. I always attach my band to my chalkbag w/ a biner, and when i'm climbing i can hear it clink around.. I like the sound =)

i take mine off when i climb too. but i lost it once. even just putting it on a biner is not very safe, unless it is a locking biner. it really sucked to loose it. i would reccomend leaving all rings at home when there is a climbing trip planned.

The only jewelry items I'll ever wear are my necklaces... I have several beaded ones and a chain and locket that were my grandmother's. They're kind of good-luck charms.

One day while training at work a team mate got his wedding band stuck in a crack while vaulting over a obstacle course wall. The joint above his ring finger was severly injured. This injury put an end to his chosen career. That wasn't climbing, but your finger could get caught in rock much easier.

So Nikegirl, that means:

1 The wedding band
3 Earrings
1 Nose ring
2 Nipple rings
1 Bellybutton ring
3 "Hood" rings
1 Toe ring

Yeah, I would like to be there when you are "deracking" before you "rack up". But I guess you do that before actually arriving at the rock

TRADitionally yours,
