OK, I'm still looking for a climbing partner to go climb New New Mexico. I'm getting more desperate to get out and pull on rock every day. I have gear, but no partner. I'm ready to go as soon as next weekend!!!

sorry, dude, partner or no partner, I don't think you're climbing in NM any time soon. Everything in New Mexico is closed due to extreme fire danger. Even the areas that we thought would remain open appear to be closed. The regulations are a little cryptic, as to what is or isn't open, and I heard at the gym last night of some climbers who were recently fined for hiking in an area they didn't know was closed, so the rangers mean business. Best bet is to call the ranger stations and go from there. Be careful, and hopefully we'll get some rain soon so we can be climbing in state before september...

On the subject, let me just say that we should all respect the fire danger closures, even though i saw two cars at apache canyon just yesterday

Some stuff closed last thursday, the rest closes this thursday...tomorrow...not sure where apache falls into this mix. I know el rito closes tomorrow, for example. Regardless, I agree, we need to respect the closures...

I wasn't too sure how much/if Pecos was closed, and seeing the two cars, I pulled over to see if there was anything posted. Sure enough the rangers have put up the 'closed to all access' signs on the barb wire fence that has the hole cut for the approach trail. -Max

So does this mean it's kind of pointless for me to find a one-day climbing partner in Santa Fe/ABQ? I wll be in Santa Fe from July 4-7 for a meeting and wouldn't mind blowing off one day of it to go climbing.

When I was home a few years ago in Los Alamos I did a quick netsearch and found some climbers up there. They go climbing every weekend as I recall around White Rock, and while it wasn't the most stellar climbing, it wasn't bad. Certainly not in a fire hazard area. Try a google search for rock climbing and los alamos and see who you can track down.

Not everyplace in NM is closed. Just like the last few years, when everywhere else is closed due to fire. Mentmore rock in Gallup remains climbable. So come to Gallup buy some trinkets and go climbing. We have sport routes and trad. Yes the crag is short (50') but what are you going to do.

Matt Samet also wrote a guidebook several years ago (Sport Climbing in New Mexico). White Rock was lots of fun. It took a bit to get used to the slick Bassalt. I'd be up for coming down one weekend but I need about a week in advance to plan. There are some tall routes in Diablo that I'd like to check out. Did Diablo get burned too?

If you're close to the Jemez mountains, there's some lines over at the Guadalupe Box that are still open (gneiss) from the same outcropping as the Sandias. I've been wanting to go check them out. The area's about 50 minutes out from Albuquerque. All the multi-pitch routes are within areas prone to rockfall, but there's one wall with about 5 short sport routes, where decapitation would be the exception and not the norm. If anyone's interested in making the trip, I'm about 20 minutes away from the site.

Works for me. The wall faces southward (est.), but I believe its deep enough in the canyon to catch shade in the late afternoon and early evening, so early morning and late afternoon are the optimal climbing times. The rock is right near the road, but you have to cross a stream to get there, so bring along some Tevas and insect repellent.
