Who has the greatest climbing resume in history?

Is it Fred Beckey with his thousands of FA's?

Layton Kor, with hundreds of FA's in the desert, Alps, Dolomites, and Boulder?

Anyone of several Yosemite climbers?

Messner?

Peter Croft?

I am looking for all-around status (aid, free, alpine and rock including big walls).

Lets hear your input and see what we've got.

Is there any mountain Fred Beckey hasn't climbed?

My vote would be for the great Alex Lowe.

Greg Child would probably be high on my list. Along with Peter Croft, Alex Lowe, Lynn Hill and a few others would rank up there as well.

REINHOLD MESSNER

He was a great rock climber, until he lost some toes in the Nanga Parbat epic where his brother died.
And he became, without any doubt, the greatest himalayist of all time

Just some well known facts:

1)First climber to complete the 14 8000m peaks

2)First solo of an 8000 peak (Nanga Parbat)

3)First ascent of Everest without oxigen (with Habeler)

4)First solo ascent of Everest

5)And he is still ALIVE !!!!!
(unlike Kukuckza, who died on the south face of Lhotse)

Good suggestions thus far. Messner is an obvious choice. I'd also throw in for consideration:

Hermann Buhl - excellent rock climber, only solo FA of an 8000 meter peak, first to do an 8000 meter peak in alpine style. He really pushed the limits and style of mountaineering into the modern age.

Chris Bonnington - for an all around spectacular career which continues to this day.

No offence to Lynn, but what has she done in the AID and MOUNTAINEERING arena. GREAT freeclimber, but ALL-AROUND? I think she has some work to do.

Messner and Alex Lowe. Read Crystal Horizon and I think you will have to admit that Messner was incredible!

This is a tough question, and I cannot name just one climber. Just as Lynn Hill has done little in aid and mountaineering, how much non-Alpine climbing has Messner done?

Climbing is too broad of a subject to say that just ONE person is the best.

Two more names to throw out, though, that are in the same all-around realm as Alex Lowe:
Conrad Anker (Everest, Bigwall, 5.12+ free ascents)

Greg Child (Hard Aid, 5.13 free climber)

I don't see all of this on Lynn Hills resume.

Jim Bridwell

I think he is a true master. Climb a few of his routes and you will see.

Alex Lowe has my vote ... not just for the climbs he did, but also for the kind of person he was off the mountain. He took good care of his family, always positive, always helping the other guy out...

dave graham? exactly which hard trad, mixed, ice, aid, alpine, or mountaineering routes has he done?

reinhold messner(check out his routes in the dolomites. now solo them in mountaineering boots) is high on the list. alex lowe is a good choice. bridwell and donini. some of the young guys in the same vein are pretty amazing - kelly cordes, scott decapio, etc.

We can argue all we want. IMO, Lynn Hill has accomplished more in climbing than any other person ever born.

My answer is just as right as yours. There is no wrong answer, there is no right answer.

Deal with it.

Lynn Hill.

Oh yeah, Mountaineering isn't real climbing.

Aid climbing isn't real climbing. What fun is it to climb on gear.

have to say Alex Lowe, Lynn Hill, Peter Croft.
Alex was an incredible climber. what more can you say about Lynn or Peter.
an honorable mention should go to the Huber brothers. don't forget the Bird. there really are quite a few climbers that should not be left out.

REINHOLD MESSNER. Hands down. Lynn Hill is close second. Dave Graham and Chris Sharma are very very accomplished and tie for being the best of the Next Generation climbers. However, two climbers that I think deserve to be mentioned are George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. I know there is a lot of dispute about if they really made it to the top of Everest, but I think they did and for their time, even just being on the mountain like they were is simply astounding.

I just read Lynn Hill's new autobigrophy. A few of you have mentioned her lack of aid climbing. Not true. She did the first all female ascent of the Shield back in the 70's when that route was still a testpiece. True she's not a master of aid climing but she done plenty to qualify as a truly great all around climber.

For rock climbing: Royal Robbins. A great visionary without whom climbing would probably be very different today.

Alpinism: Messner, hands down.

    Wolfgang Gullich
Huber Bros.
Alex Lowe
Lynn Hill
Ron Kauk

These are my heros!

Can't belive no one mentioned Wolfgang Gullich the guy did the 1rst 5.14 and put up Action Direct 14d on of the hardest climbs to this day. Not to mention his routes on Trango and Central tower of pain. What about Ron Kauk? The guy may have not seen his share of mountaineering and ice climbing but has done a lot of everthing else plus he put up Magic line a 5.14 trad.
Some of you might want to check Lynn Hills list again. Shes done alot more than people realize!
I know that their are some great mountaineers but c'mon how many of them are known for climbing sport and bouldering too!

And who said Dave Graham?
Dave Graham does'nt even climb trad!
