An opportunity has presented itself for me to move to Memphis Tennessee. I’m wondering what rock and ice climbing the area has to offer. I’m coming from Salt Lake City, where both are abundant.

Lots of rock in the TAG (tennessee alabama georgia) area.
Not much ice though

I dont know of any ice climbing in Tennesse.. there is plenty of rock tho!

Think long and hard before you make the move. The closest good rock is 3 1/2 hours away. The summers are hot, humid, and lonnnnggg. Come check it out and see for yourself if the job will offset the location. Maybe they can create a position a for you in Chattanooga instead.

i know that there is alot of climbing in chattanoga TN but i can't think of anything near where you are moving...good luck..

While Memphis isn't in the heart of Southeastern Climbing there is an established club, called the Memphis Mountaineers, that has been very active in climbing for more than ten years. There is some beautiful sandstone in Arkansas and in southern Illinois. The Chattanooga area and all the Cumberland Plateau are Awesome and there is some ice in North Georgia and western North Carolina. Check out seclimbers.org

yeah... Western TN isnt that blessed but eastern TN has some pretty good stuff...

Check with this guide service called Granite Arches the guy who runs it is named Swiss Stockton. Their website has information on ice climbing and the current conditions of the ice.

Everyone else has said it, but if you want to climb ICE when the season is in I will show you more ice(ass) than you can shake a stick at... now keep in mind that its not going to be quite as good as what your use too.

excellent rock 3 hours away
world class rock 3.5 hours away
there is more ice than you think, and i know where it is and when!
+ i'll go to NH in the winter with you, i need an experienced partner

It also seems to me that you will have some nice climbing options not terribly far away in Arkansas and Southern Illinois.

How 'bout climbing gyms in Memphis?? I'm contemplating a move as well, it would be a good career move.
I'm a new climber and am still dependent on the gym to work on my technique/strength. I've got a long way to go before I'll be capable of doing some serious climbing outside (my recent first outside trip I struggled on 5.3's for 2 days and then was extremely sore and stiff for days after)

If you like single pitch sport routes the south is the place. As for ice climbing I wouldn't even bother bringing your gear, better yet if your moving out here trade it in for a kayak. There is a ton of boating here.

So I made the move and I'm somewhat settled, and now I'm ready to get out and hit the rock. PM me if anyone is interested.
I'm also looking for an "in" into the "local" kayaking scene.

Dude,
I'm really sorry you actually made the move. I was considering moving the other direction, I had a job offer with Black Diamond. There is absolutely no comparison between here and there. There is climbing here, but it shames in comparison to the abundance of everything in and around SLC.
The biggest negative is proximity. You have to drive hours to get to anything decent, where in SLC hours gets you you to the tetons, Moab, Zion.
I get sick just thinking about it.
Anyway, good luck on adjusting to the humidity and if you head to Chattanooga, let me know, that's where I climb most.
