And you thought you had a nasty whipper story! Check out what this enterprising free soloist experienced when doing God's work and recovering a shoe.

I don't think God has ever asked anyone to recover a shoe for him.

They never said he was a free soloist.

You fabricate as much as whomever said the quote about being a champion pole vaulter helped him negotiate his landing.

Rescuers tried to reach the man late Wednesday, but the effort was postponed because of dwindling light and the rugged, forest-clad terrain. The rescuers reached him Thursday morning and winched him aboard a helicopter before rushing him to hospital.

The man was unconscious when rescued and was suffering from serious head and spinal injuries, officials said. Temperatures overnight dipped to 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

Note to self: If you get hurt in Australia, do it early in the day.

No, I think "moron" is far more appropriate. All jokes aside, I hope he gets better soon.

Wow. Aren't we serious today?!

In reply to:
I don't think God has ever asked anyone to recover a shoe for him.

My grammar isn't that bad. I said he was "doing God's work and retireiving a shoe." That 's two things because "and" is a conjunction that joins seperate items. If I had said "I'm going to do my laundry and eat a burger" would you be telling me that eating a burger isn't going to get my knickers any cleaner?

In reply to:
They never said he was a free soloist.

Again, I didn't say the articles made that claim. I think it's fair to call him a "free soloist" as he is doing an exposed climb with real fall potential without aid gear or protection.

In reply to:
You fabricate as much as whomever said the quote about being a champion pole vaulter helped him negotiate his landing.

Also, I was pretty much kidding the whole time, so please don't assume that I've done any real fact checking to back up the claim about whether or not he's actually a moron. That's your call.

Actually sarcat, if you read the third article you'll see that i actually took the time to copy and paste the quote myself, rather than taking the easy way out and making a clever remark about the story.

First, the articles never stated that he was doing any technical climbing. It sounded more to me that he was hiking back up a steep slope and lost his footing in the dirt/mud/whatever. The article never stated that the canyon walls were shear rock. It simply stated that it was a canyon, which doesn't really imply anything one way or the other. It says he landed in a tree, so I suppose he must have freefallen for some distance, but it really doesn't specify. Now that I'm being a nitpicky bastard... don't you have to be on rope to take a "whipper"? To my understanding, "whippers" were named because of the whipping motion of the rope, or because one's body is whipped when the rope becomes taut. Ok, I'm done. Again, I'm not trying to be a dick, I was just thinking that you kinda jumped to conclusions initially.

The sneaker rolled down a slope in rugged, steep terrain.

To me, that implies "rugged, steep terrain," not "near-vertical/vertical rock face."

Now, you've got a point there (on all of the above). Ok, for those of you who care...this story doesn't relate to rockclimbing in any way. This wasn't a technical climb, or at least it was not attempted that way. It was a yahoo who went off a trail because he dropped something and slipped. I thought I was being carefull enough by not referring to him as a "climber". As climbers, I thought you might enjoy this story of someone taking what is reported to be a 230' fall without a fatality. Particularly, I thought you might enjoy the various halarious speculations about the cause of his survival, i.e "something must have broken his fall" or that he used his pole-vaulting skills to negotiate the fall! (Personally, I think this was a sharp slope, and much more of a speedy slide, than a "fall".)

You could have omitted the "doing God's work" since it seems irrelevant then to the action of recovering a shoe.

Moron vs. Mormon... You folks are harsh.

I have to assume when he went out on a ledge to get the shoe, he must have considered it safe to do so. I give him the benefit of the doubt.

I have seen numerous climbers taking the same kind of chances at the top of routes when they are setting an anchor and haven't clipped in yet. Go read some previous posts on this site and I am sure you can find an example.

"Using skills he had learned as a champion pole vaulter, he landed in a thick canopy of bush and negotiated his landing to the valley below."

Yeah, im sure on the way down this 230' fall, the only thing going through his mind was "Now, I'm used to falling 18 feet onto a 4 foot thick mat. This should be a no-brainer, if I twist this way, I'll only crack 6 vertabrete, and then this way will only slightly fracture my skull. now that I'm unconsious, ill use my unconsious pole-vaulting champ skills to continue to tumble like a dumba@@ down this canyon.

Forgive me for sounding insensitive, but, The safty barriers are there for a reason, not just to protect "Other people" (Non pole-vaulting champs)

No offense dingus, but its a SHOE, a damn SHOE, ok, if it were his 5 year old brother, sure, even a wounded puppy. I can see that. But, he climbed over the saftey railing for a k-swiss...Or even a gucci, seriously people, whats your life worth? I assure you, they'll pay for that shoe many times over in hospital bills...

He might be alive right now....but not likely for long. Maybe he can donate some organs....if he was still unconscious after so long....very likely he'll remain unconscious.
