Hey people, I bought a new rope (my very first) a couple weeks ago (Mammut Galaxy 50M) and haven't gotten around to actually opening it up yet. And maybe that's for the best because recently I've been hearing things about uncoiling a rope for the first time. Is there a particular way it should be done??? Can you hurt it if you don't do it correctly??? Any and all opinions welcome, and if you belive there is a proper way of doing this, please explain as best you can... Thank you all in advance!!! 1) un-knot the strands holding it coiled 2) throw it on the ground/in your rope bag/whatever 3) flake it out, then (if necessary) re-coil 4) go climb on it 5) do a full-length rap to straighten it out. Problem solved on your end... I used to work in a 7-story building and I'd just double my new ropes over around the railing of the stairs on the top floor, then toss the ends down (after hours, of course). However, that was when I still cared. My last 3 ropes haven't got such gentle treatment -- I broke 'em in as per above. They all work fine and don't kink much. Incidentally, I too have a Galaxy (though a 10mm x 60m one). It is a great rope and I think that you will be hard pressed to make it tangle after the first few climbs. Great hand on that rope. eah gads, dont just pile your rope, you'll get twist in it for sure.... maybe if your 7 stories us you can let it hang. It takes about an hour to un-coil a rope from the factory. Have you ever coiled a garden hose? A rope is coiled the same way. For every coil the rope has a 1/2 twist in it. Take your time and uncoil it slowly removing that 1/2 twist for every coil. This has also been posted elsewhere on RC.com Good luck its a pain in the butt, but it pay big to do it right. I wish the rope makers would send a "how to" with their ropes, it would help all of us out.

Check out this thread: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=9255&forum=40&11 And don't just flake it! I did that with my first rope and it still has that damn half twist in it making it a pain and it always gets tangled. Sux man. This explains it well from someone who knows whats up

good call on that rope man, the mammut galaxy is the best rope I've ever used (I own one too). you shouldn't worry about it kinking or anything, I've never had any trouble with mine. However I hate figure 8's so I never had a belay or rap device that would kink it up for me anyhow. Enjoy that rope, there are few like it.

I wish I read this post before I unpackaged my first rope. I took it straight out of the bag and started attempting the mountaineers coil. Twisted the hell out of it After lots of rapels it managed to straighten out for the most part.

Yeah, definitely uncoil it properly. With my first rope I simply untied it, piled it and flaked it. It got so kinky it needed to star in its own porno movie. Then I let my friend show me how to uncoil my second rope and I have had NO kinks in it and the only twists that are in it are the ones I put in it when I use my bastardized version of the butterfly coil to transport it. Thanks everyone for your replies! I will unroll it this time cuz it's my first one and it cost a bundle. Maybe when I get my second one I'll untie it, throw it on the ground and flake it out... If I had an available tall building or a cliff close by, I might just do that full rap; but that would take a bit of doing. Thanks all!
