yeah! I'm interning in DC for the summer and have been trying to get out climbing a lot. I've been out to Great Falls 4 or 5 times already and am trying to work out a trip to West Virginia in July some time. I don't have a car or gear with me other than my shoes/harness/chalk so its hard to get out too much. but pm me and i'll let you know when i'm heading out again. -greg

In reply to: Hey are there any climbers/bilderers in Maryland/DC area. I’ve heard rumors of climber sightings around here; two of them were from California. One I think was called rradam or something, he was run out of town and now is in hiding way down in NC or somewhere down that way. The other one, well his name was Tim, he had his belongings packed up in the middle of the night and made a fast track out to LA under darkness, I hear he is now organizing an expedition to come east and climb Triple S!! Other than those two you won’t find any climbers in MD.

If you skulk around the Potomac river you may catch glimpse of the elusive "climberus schistus". They will generally scramble for cover but leave behind telltale topropes, carpet scraps, and mosquito repellant. There are many disbelievers though after someone came forward a few years ago and admitted to setting up fake topropes as a hoax. Good luck in your quest! Perhaps you can find the holy grail of DC climbing "Carderockus Jeffus", or "crock" for short.

the dc/maryland area has plenty of climbing to offer. just do a route search. the only challenge is the weather. From the new river to the gunks the areas share about the same weather system. this is not always the case. last month seneca was washed out and nelson was dry(these grags are about 15 miles from each other). many of the areas offfer easy toprope options in case you don't/ can't lead. be safe and welcome to the dc metro area -hawk

go to carderock or sugarloaf mtn or especially great falls, va and you'll find a ton of climbers! people say it's hard to spot climbers at great falls, but that doesn't mean they're not there .... it's actually illegal for climbers at great falls to be visible from any of the oulooks so that the tourists don't get stupid ideas. but if you get a guidebook or just park in the 'climbers' lot' (sharp right when you enter the park), you'll find plenty of them.

All climbers in the area have been recruited for the war on terrorism. They are being trained to scale ... oh that's classified. Never mind. Those damn Al Qaeda tourists are everywhere! 8^) Seriously, go to Great Falls, Virginia on a weekend and you'll find more climbers than you ever wanted to see at one time. They are hanging from every tree that grows close to a wall. Literally. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) Mountaineering Section meets at Carderock most Wednesday afternoons and at Great Falls, VA most Friday afternoons. Here is a link to their site: http://www.patc.net/chapters/mtn_sect/ They sell a guide book for Great Falls, VA and MD. They have a list serve you can join also.
