The importance of breathing to stay relaxed (and alive, for that matter) has not been lost on me. However, I am curious as to the proper breathing pattern while in the motion of climbing. ie. When pulling with your hands or pushing with your feet: do you breathe in, breathe out, or hold your breath? Does it make a difference?

Climbing isn't rhythmic enough to breathe in the manner you are describing. Some moves requiring a lot of core strength necessitate holding your breath during the move. Hard climbing will make you breathe like a freight train. On hard climbs, I find I have a little more endurance if I breathe a little more deeply than I fell like I need to.

Click the "View the Article this topic is about" link at the top of the post to read an article I wrote on breathing techniques a few months ago, there is some info at the end for applying it to climbing.
