Hey all, My name is Scott and I'm a sophomore in college. Our college encourages us to do a study abroad sometime during our 4 years here, so I worked out an independent "study" to Thailand. The college thinks I'll be studying...I think I'll be climbing! Anyways, I will be there all of January 2003, so I was wondering if anyone can help me out with beta on climbing spots in Thailand, firsthand info, or if you live there, possible climbing buds. I am a R&I subscriber, so I have their beta on Thailand, and I've checked out RC.com's beta too, but I'm looking for more, so if you can help me out, send me a PM or an e-mail at stugelsc@luther.edu Thanks and climb hard! Scott

I didn't climb much in Thailand (or at least not as much as I'd like to have), however I would at least look at the guidebook and go after some multipitch routes (the bolts may suck, just a warning) or hire a boat to roll out to Monkey Face (Monkey Island?), etc. The sea-stack type of climbs looked more fun than the local trade routes I went up on when I hired a guide. Bring your own rope and draws and a partner if you possibly can. I had trouble finding a guide who was on the same wavelength I was, partly because my Thai was poor, and partly because I was unfamiliar with the area(s). It looked like Railay Wall and the island routes were where it's at -- less crowded, longer, better views than the low tide wall and other stuff on Railey East. I wish I'd tried to get a permit to climb in Laos, but I checked with the guys who did the article for Rock & Ice and they indicated that the Lao government was no longer hip to this. Wee Changrua has some 'stealth beta' on his page regarding that topic, also on guiding near Railey. He was a solid guy, but due to a miscommunication was in Krabi town when I thought I'd hired his services to show me around. Basically, bring a partner and buy a guidebook, AND talk to the local guides about the bolts, you should be fine. Don't depend on finding a guide that really understands your requests unless you work on your Thai and are blessedly lucky. Doing the trade routes was, IMHO, somewhat of a waste of time, although everyone loves the view at the top of 'Massage Secrets', it is the shot you see in all the postcards. Yosemite it ain't...

Thanks man! I'm thinking of doing some bouldering on Koh Tao, or Turtle Island too. Any beta on that?
