"It's good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end."
- Ursula K. Le Guin

This quote is one of many from the book "The Quoatable Climber," edited by Johnathon Waterman (and available through fine booksellers everywhere.....).

The first time I climbed outside, it was through a two-day AMC climbing workshop, and the guides were incredible human beings. (One had successfully summitted Denali, and they also ran a youth program, where kids mandated by the courts were taken on climbing/mountaineering trips.

Each of the days, after we arrived at the cliffs but before we began to set up, they read/recited text from climbers. I don't think any of the others in my group cared one whit, or were even really listening, but both of the readings they gave spoke directly to me.

The readings were a powereful meditation to put the experience we were about to have in context. Through them, I felt a connection to my guides, who had found the reading and were thoughtful enough to be sharing it with me. I also felt like I was being initiated into the climbing community through the emotions I felt while listening to the reading. And I felt a connection, appreciation and healthy respect for nature and the rock I was standing before.

I think the readings can be a really powerful tool, and if one of your students is touched through the effort you make, it is worth all the effort you make in finding suitable works that convey the message you are looking to say.

I am not sure this qualifies as motivational, but it's funny. I got this one from my climbing partner who read it somewhere, so I don't know who to attribute it to. Here it is. "I climb just as hard as anyone. I just do it on easier routes."

I hate that qoute. Especially because it is not true. There appear to be quite a few old, bold climbers.

I agree of course, but the quote is not to be taking extremely literally. Its just a saying that promotes safety ... thats all. I don't understand why to get uptight, its just a quote.

"I climb just as hard as anyone. I just do it on easier routes."

That's a fantastic quote :D It surely captures the essence of why rockclimbing is such an awsome activity regardless of ability. I'll be using that one 'til the day I die.

Then the confusing quote one of my friends use regularly..."There are rockclimbers, and then there are rockclimbers!"

Only make sense phonetically really :? Depends a bit on how you pronounce 'rockclimbers'...

I would recommend getting your hands on a book called "The Edge." The author is Howard Fergusson. The book has been out of print for a number of years but it is an incredible collection of motivational sports quotes, phrases, and writings of inspirational people throughout history. It is not climbing specific but you will find it better than anything else you could get your hands on. If I had the ability/responsibility, I would require every coach to own a copy. Good luck!

Enjoy: :)

"A climber's day always starts at the crux: getting out of bed."

"There are only 3 real sports: bull-fighting, car racing and mountain climbing. All the others are mere games." — Hemingway.

"I find that rock climbing is the finest, most healthiest sport in the whole world. It is much healthier than most; look at baseball, where 10 000 sit on their ass to watch a handful of players" — John Salathé, 1974.

"I don't want to write about climbing; I don't want talk about it; I don't want to photograph it; I don't want to think about it; all I want to do is do it." — Chuck Pratt.

"Leading something that is 50/50 is not 'my limit'. It's off route." — Nathan Sweet.

"Where are the holds, Hector ?!?!" — Paulina.
"There were no holds so I had to use skill."

"On real cliffs, opportunities for problems loom like an early morning drive in mist-shrouded moose country." — Guido.

"I love climbing because it feels so good when I stop..." — Karl "we're all nuts".

"Climbers seem to forget that we said in our introduction that there were simply '50 classic routes', not 'the 50 classics'. We chose 50 from a list of about 120. Only a torturer will ever pry loose from our lips the names of those other 70 classics..." — Steve Roper.

"One method of getting loved ones to look more fondly on your climbing is to tell them that since you've started climbing you hardly do drugs anymore." — David Harris.

"It's all fun and oneness with nature until you realize you can't have diarrhea and vomit at the same time without an extra bucket." — Nate B.

"Fucking Layton Kor... God I hate Cameron Burns. I wonder how much it would hurt if I just jumped? Why the hell would anyone climb this hunk of dirt anyway, or anything for that matter-pointless? I used to enjoy climbing b/c of the sweet anticipation of reaching the top. I've slowed down enough to stop and enjoy more of the movement inbetween.

Hey, I really like that one.

Here's something I heard a couple weekends ago at the crag (not inspirational, but kind of funny) said by a climber who was being pestered by people who: a) wanted to pass him, and b) were loudly complaining about the route.

"If you stop crawling up my @$$, this climb will stink much less."

This doozey happened this weekend while getting slapped around on the wide stuff.

If I needed to dump a girlfriend, I'd come here and make her climb this route.

What if she sent it?

I'd marry her.
