This quote is one of many from the book "The Quoatable Climber," edited by Johnathon Waterman (and available through fine booksellers everywhere.....).
The first time I climbed outside, it was through a two-day AMC climbing workshop, and the guides were incredible human beings. (One had successfully summitted Denali, and they also ran a youth program, where kids mandated by the courts were taken on climbing/mountaineering trips.
Each of the days, after we arrived at the cliffs but before we began to set up, they read/recited text from climbers. I don't think any of the others in my group cared one whit, or were even really listening, but both of the readings they gave spoke directly to me.
The readings were a powereful meditation to put the experience we were about to have in context. Through them, I felt a connection to my guides, who had found the reading and were thoughtful enough to be sharing it with me. I also felt like I was being initiated into the climbing community through the emotions I felt while listening to the reading. And I felt a connection, appreciation and healthy respect for nature and the rock I was standing before.
I think the readings can be a really powerful tool, and if one of your students is touched through the effort you make, it is worth all the effort you make in finding suitable works that convey the message you are looking to say.

I am not sure this qualifies as motivational, but it's funny. I got this one from my climbing partner who read it somewhere, so I don't know who to attribute it to. Here it is. "I climb just as hard as anyone. I just do it on easier routes."

I agree of course, but the quote is not to be taking extremely literally. Its just a saying that promotes safety ... thats all. I don't understand why to get uptight, its just a quote.

That's a fantastic quote :D It surely captures the essence of why rockclimbing is such an awsome activity regardless of ability. I'll be using that one 'til the day I die.
Then the confusing quote one of my friends use regularly..."There are rockclimbers, and then there are rockclimbers!"
Only make sense phonetically really :? Depends a bit on how you pronounce 'rockclimbers'...

I would recommend getting your hands on a book called "The Edge." The author is Howard Fergusson. The book has been out of print for a number of years but it is an incredible collection of motivational sports quotes, phrases, and writings of inspirational people throughout history. It is not climbing specific but you will find it better than anything else you could get your hands on. If I had the ability/responsibility, I would require every coach to own a copy. Good luck!

I used to enjoy climbing b/c of the sweet anticipation of reaching the top. I've slowed down enough to stop and enjoy more of the movement inbetween.

Hey, I really like that one.
Here's something I heard a couple weekends ago at the crag (not inspirational, but kind of funny) said by a climber who was being pestered by people who: a) wanted to pass him, and b) were loudly complaining about the route.
