Hi, I searched and saw a bunch of topics on summersville, but couldnt find what I was looking for. I saw the article in 'climbing' and realized that Summersville was right near where im going to college (Go VT!!).. So anyways, I was curious if anyone knew what times are good for deep water bouldering there, seeing as the waters only deep part of the year cause they drain it (right?). Also I was wondering if there was a guide out there I could find, especially if theres one online, that could tell me how to get there and where the best climbs are, what the ratings are, etc, so I know where to go. If you have any help that'd be great, thanks.

They raise the lake from begining of April to mid April but it's friggin cold then (and lower it during the fall). In general I don't think it warms up reasonably until July sometime and can still be cool in July. The article covered most of the good walk in area's reasonably well there's a couple of places near the bridge on both sides they didn't cover but one has a sneaky dangerous under the water ledge and the other is mostly low angled. If you are interested in going in August pm me then I live under 3 hrs from there and will hopefully have some time to get out there then and give you a tour. Climbhigh2005 was organizing a pontoon boat trip there (get to explore a lot more cliffs) but I don't know if that is still on or filled up or what.

if you refer to the Climbing issue with the K2 special in it there is a very long and informative article about "deep water soloing" as they called it in there with tons of awesome pics. check it out i forget the issue number but theres a huge cover shot of K2 on it. its entirely about summersville, va.

Ok, thanks for the tips, I was refering to the artical in the K2 climbing magizine, looks like I could've just re-read that to get most of my information. I am still curious if there is a written guide for the area though if anyone knows of one.

The the area is called Pirates Cove, and other than on this site I haven't seen a written guide for the area. There might be something in Rick Thompson's New River Gorge/Summersville Lake guide book.

Heck, for that matter it may be just as fun to grab a boat and hop out wherever it looks cool and climb, really doesnt matter since you dont have to take time to rope up and difficulty isnt a factor when you can just bail out whenever you want, thats why it looks so cool. Think i'd have issues pulling people in a jon boat without flipping it if we just piled all the weight on one side while the person pulled themselves in from the other? Cause you need to be 25 years old to rent a pontoon boat, which I'm not...plus theres that whole, I'm poor thing...

The water was plenty warm enough to swim in this year at the end of May the week after May 2-4 (week before Memorial Day weekend for those not from the Great White North).

That place looks super good. The only sketchy part was the lie back shots (on some under-cling crack) about 50 feet up from the water. If you were to fall from a position like that onto your back you would get jacked up, regardless of it being over liquid.

i went in aug last year, me my girlfriend and two dogs in a canoe...while some of the getting out onto the rock was a little sketchy, we never flipped it. we usually kicked the dogs out anyway, they love to swim. as far as guidebooks, i did not have one until i got back and didnt really feel like i needed one, just paddled up to whatever looked cool and started climbing. it was a great trip, weather cooperated, beers were cold, and campground was very chill (and empty).

Don't get a guide. Even if there is one, knowing grades would just spoil an amazing experience. My and a bunch of friends went there after a competition that we went down to Virginia to compete in, and after that we went to Summersville and NRG. We were planning on climbing only at NRG, but after looking and climbing at Summersville one day after climbing, we never looked back. We went to the Rat's Hole area, and basically we'd just see a cool-looking route, try it, then move ten feet to the left, try that, then move ten more feet to the left, and over and over again until we got a couple hundred feet away from where we started. Knowing routes would unintentionally limit your creativity and would definitely make it less fun. http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=38323
