Does anyone know what happened at Williamson Rock today (Sat)? I was at the top of Being There and heard from the direction of Waterfall Wall, rockfall, then screaming, wailing, and people yelling for a doctor. It was awful to hear. Hope whatever happened ended okay. Terry

After I decked on a ledge with my head barely missing the ledge and going over I baught a helmet. Just because its sport doesn't mean that you can't get a head injury. I'd rather wear one than not.

Damn, that sucks :( As far as helmets go, I've never seen a single person wearing one when they are not climbing...

Show a little respect and compassion for the beautiful young girl that was injured and her parents, who by the way are likely friends of yours.

How about, Not sitting directly underneath a climb? (teaching your child to not sit directly underneath a climb?) Yelling rock? Knowing what it means? Head injury? ...Really?

In reply to: Williamson = Sport Climbing Sport Climbers don't generally wear helmets. I was there on Saturday. I think of the roughly 40-50 people I saw climbing, probably about 5 of them had helmets. I don't get it though. I was belaying with mine on after I almost took a dinner plate to the head at Malibu Creek last week. Yelling "rock" is nice, but you might have 1/4 of a second to identify the problem, gauge where it's going to land, and move out of the way. Just in case my spider sense doesn't save me, I find it comforting to have something hard wrapped around my brain. We've pretty much all agreed that you wear a helmet when you go biking. How is it that we're too cool to wear one sitting for 8 hours in a falling rock zone?

There are certain sport areas where it may make more sense for the belayer to be wearing a helmet than the climber. When we climb at the Minimum wall in Maple (cobbles frequently get pulled off), I often wear helmet belaying, and when we took our dogs, we'd always tie them well away from the wall. Just because it's sport and fairly safe for the leader, doesn't make it safe for people below. Witness a similar accident posted below in Idaho that had a much less happy outcome.
