Oh codey, you might want to check your facts on that bold statement . He may have been born 20 July 1919, but he's still very much alive, and living in New Zealand I believe.

I to wish to meet then man. In fact, i know exactly where in Auckland, NZ he lives. Also, my dad went to NZ for business, and had dinner at a persons place, RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO HIM!!
He wasn't there , if he was, dad would have gotten an autograph for me. Ahwell!!

yea he was born in 1919 but I still think he is dead. I did a 20 page report on him but it never occered to me he was alive.

Sir Edmund Hillary's educational achievements reached new heights yesterday when he received his eighth honorary doctorate.
Dressed in red regalia, he humbly accepted an honorary fellowship and honorary master of science degree from Waikato Institute of Technology during a formal graduation ceremony.
"These things are always a great honour," he said before the ceremony.
Institute Council chairman Gordon Chesterman said Sir Edmund's contribution to New Zealand was legendary.
"He is quite simply one of the most remarkable men of our time and we are greatly honoured that he has accepted this award from the institute."

Did you know that the sons of Edmund Hillary and Norgay Tenzing are climbing everest this season, to comemorate their fathers doing so? I think thats pretty cool on their part.

Yeah its for the celebration of 50 years since they summited... which i agree is pretty cool. lets hope it goes as well as edmunds and tenzings expo even if they dont summit

I really disagree with honorary degrees!! It doesn't matter who they are, they are great in one aspect of their lives but that doesn't make them great or even knowledgable to recieve a degree. It takes years to recieve a degree and even more a masters, so the people who acutally go through all the hard work should be able to recieve such a distinguised honour. Don't get me wrond Hillary is great and all but noone should be reciebind honorary degrees.

hey, well did u know that both tenzing norgay AND edmund hillary's sons both summited everest, on May 16th in fact. I read it in the paper.

Ed Hillary is a role model for me too. not so much because he was the first up Everest but because, dispite his climbing achevements, he is still a genuinely humble, down to earth guy. It's not generally known that after Everest he went on to be the first person to reach the South Pole over land. He was helping a British attempt to cross the Ice from coast to coast by dumping supplies at designated positions between the Ross Sea to the North and the Pole. A Pom by the name of Vivian Fuches(pronounced fukes) was to lead the British team from the south coast. Fuches had specally designed four track vehicles about the size of a small truck, with a completly enclosed and heated cab, Hillarys supply team used Massy Ferguson tractors. The only modifications to them was the addition of a canvase "cab" and rubber and steel tracks between the back and front wheels. They towed the supplies on big sleds. It was obovious that Fuches was pissed off that Ed got to the Pole first but always claimed it wasn't revelent because the objective was to cross the Ice from coast to coast. To this day Ed has never admitted premedatating a plan to make a dash for the Pole dispite the fact he was only suposed to within a few hundred miles of the Pole to drop the last supplies but just happened to have enough fuel to push on to the Pole itself. Both Hillarys and Fuches vehicles are on display in the Antartic Wing of the Canterbury Museum here in Christchurch.

Meeting Hillary would rock my face off! Nothing could compare. I'm obsessed with Everest. I'd love to know what he thought about Mallory and Irvine.

When asked recently about Mallory and Irvine and the possibility of Mallory having reached the summit of Everest, Hillary said "I came back down".
