Very Disappointing  (North_America: United_States: Pennsylvania: Southeastern_Region: Patriot_Boulders)

Well, after all this time, yesterday I made it up to Allentown to finally lay eyes on the Patriot boulders.

Very disappointing, I can say that all the time and energy that I spent looking for this collection of rocks was only worthwhile so that I can say, from personal knowledge, that the "Patriot Boulders" are not worth the trip unless you live less than five minutes away from them, maybe not even then.

This is not a troll.

I'm sorry that I didn't have my digital camera with me to take a picture of the old car seats sitting under the sign saying "$300 fine for dumping" or the pile of tires at the base of one of the "problems".

Yes there are two or three lines there of some, I repeat some, merit. Almost all have death falls.

Great spot. Let's keep it secret. PA bouldering has a bad enough rep for climbing as it is without having to account for areas like this.

I feel better now... I had plenty of time to think about this post as I hiked back up the hill to Lincoln drive, or road or whatever.

I know exactly how you feel. As soon as I read the title, I knew it was about Patriot Boulders. I personally named these boulders Sugar Coated boulders if you get my drift. When I finally found this place, I was very mad. Kagunkie must have taken a hit to the head while writing the description for this crag because in all honesty, Patriot Boulders just suck. It's not worth the time you spend trying to find this crag as you put it.

I think it needs to be unlocked and the description needs to be edited to let future climbers of PA and w/e know that these boulders aren't what they are talked up about...

If you wanna hit up better crags, contact me and I can show you around...

Edit: I gotta say that the only part I actually saw was the beginning of Patriot. I did not venture up and over the hill. As rwaltermyer says, there are decent lines up there. I believe him.

I would beg to differ somewhat. (found them today) definitely some worthy lines, although not immediately apparent.

In height, the largest problems rival what Haycock has to offer (but not 3-star).

Quality?

But IMO, its easy to get to from the immediate Allentown area (and I'm not familar w/ what Bauer and Emmaus have to offer), so I think its a decent spot.

So if this is where I think it is, that being in the hill near the south bank of the Lehigh just after it rounds a 90 degree elbow, does anybody know who owns the property? I don't wanna visit the wrong place and spoil the wrong secret. :)

Posts like this would benefit greatly by visitors to the suspect area linking pics to the routes database.

This would help people decide beforehand if the area is worthy of visiting, alongside the written opinions, as people's ideas about such things vary greatly.

i.e. A New Hampshireite's choss pile may be an Iowan's dream crag...

If I make it there, I will provide pictures. Maybe one of the key-holders will confirm if i've found the right place.

I really really really hope I went the wrong place....

This is quite possibly the crappiest place I've ever had the displeasure of expending effort to visit. Surely it didn't help going on a very humid bug ridden evening.

Much of the surrounding area is owned by the Wildlands Conservancy. I believe these mossy dirty wet rocks fall on their property. Access should not be an issue, although it'd be better if it was. They are simply not worth visiting and should be forever condemned to the bowels of never land.

For those who wish to sacrifice a portion of their life, never to have it back again, here's a Google Map to this decrepit crag. You can park on Skyline Dr. and hike from the apartment complex west north west. It may be easier to access from Constitution Dr as the boulders are visible from the street. I will not return to find out which method of access is more convenient.

GPS: N40.59652 W75.44664

Should you be down on life and want to go to a place that feels the same as you do, take your deet: there be deer ticks (black legged ticks).

Max:

Kagunkie is laughing at your pics... I bet. I felt exactly like you did the first I visited there.

The trick is to go past the pipe is wall. And then head up the hill. Still, it doesn't look like much, then continue up the hill to your left and you'll encounter the boulders.

Deceiving hidden from down below! If you can crank harder problems, I would recommend returning... I can't.

Oh... and use Constitution... none of this Skyline nonsense...

I don't mind being laughed at. If it brings a few minutes of joy or devious pleasure, go for it.

I arrived at these from the top of the hill, not from down below. Good chance I've passed by all that was there. It's an extremely buggy area -- mosquitos and deer ticks -- that I won't consider returning to until winter when everything is dead. Besides, I still need easy to moderate problems to work.

Emmaus and South Mountain Boulders and Haycock can keep me plenty busy before I feel like going back to these.

Dunno, what is a troll? Could just as well be somebody from Florida jumping in a PA thread and rattling off something completely unrelated to the discussion at hand.

I wasn't surprised with your unhelpfulness. It's seems to be a popular reaction with anything Patriot Boulders.

You've trolled well so far.

So do you think I needed to travel further up? I'll go back to find it as I do find the Easter egg hunt to be an amusing challenge.

Will take better shoes and more bugspray though.
