They already have a good faq for the website. Look under help on the top toolbar.

I don't think the FAQ should just be links to threads. They should be concise answers written by someone who knows their stuff. Perhaps good quotes from threads could be cut and pasted into the answers. The tradgirl FAQ is pretty decent but gets pretty obtuse at times. I would use that one as a guideline or flip through an intro book like How To Rock Climb and organize your FAQ similar to the book.

Two thoughts: First, A compilation of previous threads, such as those listed here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14329 Secondly, the forum search is sketchy at best. If we're going to direct users to it, it needs to work properly. For example, when having the "Search topic title and message text" feature clicked, you typically get "Could not obtain matched posts list". However, when you click search text only, lots of matches.

In reply to: First, A compilation of previous threads, such as those listed here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14329 I am considering making that one single post, with alphabetized keywords that would steer beginners to well thought out posts. Everything would be hot linked to the post in question, and it could be updated as needed to add more links as they come along, such as alpnclmbr1's post from yesterday. The thread would then be locked to prevent it from getting cluttered with superfluous comments. Users could "nominate" a thread by sending a PM to any of the beginners forum mods. Further, we could bring out one topic every two weeks and sticky it to highlight it for a bit on a revolving basis. Would that work? User input would be most welcome.

Lets make a real FAQ. Something along the lines of the tradgirl faq, except better.(in terms of the format and depth at least)

In reply to: Lets make a real FAQ. Something along the lines of the tradgirl faq, except better.(in terms of the format and depth at least) Hmmm, I hadn't seen that site before. The overall layout of the FAQ's looked OK, but the stream of sometimes conflicting answers seemed problematic. I think you would almost have to screen any answers to eliminate the chaff, or better yet, just ask targeted users with years of experience to answer certain questions. It would be a hella lot of work, but if it was a developing project it would still be better than what we have now.

I like it; I like it alot. Please complete the whole project and get back to me tomorrow... I would be willing to work with you and others long term on this if you are interested. I'll brainstorm a little myself tonight, but it's Friday after five here on the right coast and I am hearing the siren song of a bottle of Tangueray.
