Adopt-a-Crag Alaska 2004

Climbers... Looking for a chance to give back to the local climbing community? Want to meet new partners? Need some free schwag? On Saturday, August 21st, The Access Fund will be hosting the Third Annual Adopt-a-Crag Alaska clean up, at the McHugh Creek parking area, mile 112 Seward Highway. The goal of Adopt-a-Crag is to leave the climbing areas along the Seward Highway in the most natural state possible. Clean up events include trash and graffiti removal, trail maintaince, chalk, anchor and other visual impact mitigation. Of coarse, all trash collected will be sorted and recycled appropriately.
Throughout September 2004, climbers from Joshua Tree to Smith Rocks to Cathedral Ledge New Hampshire will congregate at their favorite climbing areas to restore the routes and rocks they’ve come to love to their natural state. Last year, the Access Fund supported over 70 Adopt-a-Crag events– all told, those events involved more than 1,000 volunteers in 29 states, and British Columbia. This September, we hope to host over 100 Adopt-a-Crag celebrations. You can help us reach our goal by attending the Adopt-a-Crag event here in Anchorage.

Adopt-a-Crag is about giving back to the climbing areas we use on a regular basis. From the signs in the parking areas, to the established trail systems, to the rocks and boulders where we devote endless hours, climbers are frequent land-users, and it is important that we make an effort to maintain and care for that land. Adopt-a-Crag encourages climbing communities to engage local land managers, landowners and park service employees in conversation about ways to preserve and protect their favorite climbing areas. While climbers are generally a low impact user group, we’re frequently singled out and denied access to multiple use areas. Unfortunately this is largely due to common misconceptions about the sport of climbing. Adopt-a-Crag events provide a venue where climbers can not only preserve their own climbing environment but also to improve recreational areas for all user groups. These events have been instrumental in fostering a spirit of good will between land owners, land managers, other recreational land users and the climbing community. This healthy communication and working relationship simply keeps climbing areas open.
Adopt-a-Crag is made possible with the support of our Title Sponsor Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), Presenting Sponsor W.L. Gore, Supporting Sponsor Clif Bar and locally by Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking. Their generous contributions allow the Access Fund to offer volunteer incentives at each event. Yes… that’s free schwag!!!
So, bring some work gloves, clothing suitable for changeable weather and a friend to the McHugh Creek parking area, 10:00am on August 21st. If you’re unable to help on the 21st, please follow in the spirit of Adopt-a-Crag and use that Saturday to pick up around where ever you’re climbing. Also, please remember that the Access Fund urges all climbers to minimize their impacts to the climbing environment and that your Access Fund membership helps keep climbing areas open.
