Is it a)a beautiful & integral rok climbin move? b)A masochistic way of hurtin ur self on gud old british gritstone? c)Sumthin not used where u climb? or d) wot a mantleshelf?? Mantle shelving is when both hands are used to push down on aledge, thus propelling urself up. No footholds...merely smearing. It involves balance, grace & brute ignorance. I'm afraid I completely do not understand the purpose of this topic. How could one even possibly think of mantle-shelving as an act of brute ignorance? Mantle-shelving, through my own personal experiences has been, and will continuously be a useful techniques while toping out upon any boulder problem of route. What this topic meant to regard mantle-shelfing as an act of stupidity? Are you bashing mantle-shelfing? I'm terribly sorry, though I do not understand the purpose, nor your opinion upon this useful technique. Quote:a)a beautiful & integral rok climbin move? Personally, I believe so. Quote:b)A masochistic way of hurtin ur self on gud old british gritstone? What? What is the point of this? Quote:c)Sumthin not used where u climb? Couldn't mantle-shelfing be used upon any top-outing manoeuver? Perhaps the more experienced climbers could step in at this point, and steer you (and probably I) in the right direction, perchance. Mate i don't know what your on, but i've done a number of climbs that mantel shelving is probably the only move to efficently get to the top of a climb. I've seen people try it without the move ... and ... well suck ... get to tired or not even finish the climb. Yes it is a nessassary part of climbing, yes it can also be bloody scary when tired or pumped but the fact remains if your on a climb and refuse to do one your quite possibly going to look pretty stupid trying every other move in the book! ... and failing Practice makes perfect (or as close as we can get to that) climber_trev

It's the psychological crux of the Nutcracker. Which you can avoid by moving left and going up a corner, if memory serves (I did the mantel, though, to prove mi esto muy macho).

Ah yes, apollo! The Nutcracker mantle! Sweet move! And the holds are much better than you think they are going to be. You're right very psychological moves up a short corner crux.

the most shameless thing a climber can do on a top out is use a knee instead of a nice mantel. whenever we caught someone anywhere close to using a knee they where ridiculed to no end. just thought i'd share

If you are really bored and you have a pick-up truck, it's fun to mantle the tailgate.

mantel moves can also be used in the middle of a climb, when you have a great hold or ledge with nothing for a ways up i feel that manteling is very graceful and full of wonderful technique ... i'm bad at them, but i like them
