`PLEASE WRITE OR E-MAIL A LETTER TODAY! The entrance to Rock Canyon east of Provo, Ut. has been the site of an illegal quarrying operation. The routes on the Black Rose have been lost and several others damaged before local activists could stop the quarrying. A creative legal arrangement between Provo city, and Red Slab LLC, a private company set up by state sen. John Valentine and his law partner, Phil Lowry, has resulted in a partial solution. Two of the three owners of the 83 acre parcel want to preserve the canyon and have sold their 50% interest to Red Slab. However, Mr. Richard Davis still ownes 50%. While Red Slab is opposed to any further excavation?quarrying work, and is willing to pursue legal action, it is possible that Mr. Davis could return to quarrying opperations! To prevent this and to forever preserve Rock Canyon the other 50% needs to be purchased from Mr. Davis. Provo Mayor Lewis Billings, State Sen. Curt Bramble, and others are hopeful that the nessecery funds can be aquired from the McAllister fund. To make a case to the State the publics voice must be heard!! The Utah Quality Growth Commission needs to hear from you, who uses the canyon, how often, for what, your experiences, how you value the canyon, and how you feel about its potential as a rock quarry! Please visit http://www.rockcanyonalliance.org/. I saw disconcerting signs this morning while climbing. Apparently a land developer wants to turn the mouth of the canyon into a quarry. From what I read, it seems that everything behind Red Slab and Ed & Terry Wall is protected (the entrance), but nothing west of it is. There's an effort underway to purchase the rights and protect the entirety of the canyon forever. Take a minute to write a letter. post: John Bennet, Project Manager Quality Growth Commission, Office of the Governor/Planning & Budget State Capital Complex, East Office Building, Suite E-210 P.O.
