Any recent beta on conditions in Sierra couloirs, especially Thompson? I heard in late Aug that Gilbert and Split Mtn. have mostly melted out. And this is what a friend wrote for Labor Day weekend: Dana: ice the whole way on the right side (extremely brittle HUGE dinner plates with every swing), the snow on the left was very solid and fast moving North Peak: Ice varied alot along the route (solid water ice on bottom, brittle in the middle MASSIVE dinner plating, and then perfect once the sun hit it later in the day) I am relatively to ice in the Sierra. I have heard that couloir ice is usually best in late August, September. Is this an "unusual" year?

we were out there the 2nd week in august and did the central couloir of north peak. it was gorgeous blue ice for the fisrt half with a little dinner plating in the middle, but not too bad. i had not climbed in the sierras previously, most of the ice we had previously done was east coast or canadian rockies, so i felt very at home. it cerainly did not have the appearnce of classic neve which had been described by others to me, but was a great climb nonetheless. there did seem to be a huge volume of ice with no fear of it melting out in august.
