I just joined the gym (New Jersey Rock Gym) to get back into shape for ice season in the Adirondacks. I've done some training with Rock & River in Keene and my partner's new job kills his weekends. Looking for some people who go anywhere within a 6 hour drive from north Jersey ... Have jeep, will travel.

Hey Stuck,

I'm sorry I don't meet your criteria since I don't have ice experience, but I do life in NJ and have climbed at NJRG. I was actually planning on taking a course or two at Rock and River and have the brochure. How was that experience? How was the staff? facilities?

Thanks and good luck with your search.

Montafoner:

Rock & River is a great time, and they have excellent instructors. They even have set-back areas outside Adirondack Park just for learning. The cabins they have are beautiful but you have to book them way in advance since everyone wants to stay right where the guide's house is. If you can't get in for the night there, try either the Woodruff Motel (not bad for the price) or the Pine View Motel (cheap - includes complementary patches sewn into sheets...) either one is only 5 minutes from the guide's house. If you have some rock experience even if it's just indoors but know basic knots/commands, it helps. Everyone has a great sense of humor but strictly reionforces safety first. I like the crew's fun and mellow approach there more than the EMS training I've had. Save a few bucks by signing up early if you have no one to go with and they can pair you up with other first timers to get the group rate. Hope it helps.

Used to climb down there quite a bit at the gym.
There is some good ice down in the gap usually best on the really cold years. There is stuff around you just have to find it.

Be careful on your trips out especially with very little experience. Besides the ice skills you need winter travel skills.

See you all on the ice.

I just got a Deleware Gap guidebook last week. There are some areas mentioned, but I need to check for access issues. The gap itself should be no problem (Mt. Tammany) but there is mention of some county land and commercially owned private property. Also, does anyone know when the PA side (Minsi) is going to be open? I heard about some falcon nesting causing access shutdowns ... There are some nice waterfalls mentioned there.
